Casa Real
Ranked #4 of 7 Hotels in Tehuacan
Reviewed January 28, 2014

I stayed 3 nights at the Casa Real in Tehuacan in November of 2013, paying with my credit card (VISA, Capital One.) I had held this card for a year, using it frequently in the USA, without problems. Two days after charging my bill at this hotel, Capital One notified me that they had suspended the card because someone was phoning them to change my mailing address, phone number and e-mail address. The next day someone charged $ 11,000 USD at an online store in Los Angeles, USA. I worked with VISA and the charges were removed from my account. I think it is likely that someone associated with this hotel used my card number and name to commit this fraud. I dealt only with the woman at the registration desk, who seemed friendly and efficient, but obviously others at the hotel had access to this information, and also perhaps other companies which process charges for hotels would have the information. I can only urge everyone to watch their charge card bills carefully if they use a charge card at this hotel. I must add that I found the room clean, quiet and well equipped, had no problems while staying here, only this card fraud, which became a problem since I lost the use of the card while here in Mexico 5 more months.

Been staying at this hotel for several years after trying most of the hotels in Tehuacan (I come every month for business). Without a doubt the best hotel in Tehuacan and located 2 blocks from the center square and cathedral. The rooms are very modern with flat screen TV's (lot's of movie channels in English and CNN), very good wifi reception and even Rainwater shower heads. The beds are very comfortable and each room has air conditioning which is great as it is often rather hot in this part of Mexico.

The hotel has a full service restaurant and on whole the food is very good with breakfast being the best of the 3 meals - Mexican buffet and menu orders. My favorite is the egg-white omelet with Oaxaca cheese and bacon. For lunch or dinner, the soups are fantastic. Most of the waiters and staff speak English or can at least figure out what you are saying. The bar is a great meeting place for people in the hotel and locals as well. they often have live music and sometimes it is fun to order dinner or appetizers at the bar. Chips and guacamole are a must!

The architecture of the building is very interesting and the grounds are peaceful and relaxing. There are multiple fountains and a beautiful water sculpture in the courtyard. The 4th floor has an exercise room with stationary bikes and treadmills. This is also the area where you can get a message at night for around $20. At nights, the surrounding streets are full of good rearaurants and shops.

Room Tip: Recommend 2nd and 3rd floor rooms.

This property was wonderful. Our room looked out on a well-appointed courtyard. There was also a fountain in the hallway hear the elevator. As you come out of the hotel rooms into the open-air lobby and restaurant area, don't miss the resident duck squawking hello! Breakfast offered a wide variety from European to Mexican to traditional American. Enjoy the waffles with real maple syrup or fresh fruit.

Room Tip: Low-numbered 3rd floor rooms look out over the city, interior rooms all look into the courtyard.

Was pleasantly surprised as I had no expectations. Extremely friendly staff (even with the language barrier, we all did our best) and a comfortable room. Very good and fresh breakfast buffet as well. Will definitely stay again.

I visited friends in Tehuacan to celebrate Mexican Independance Day and they put me up at the Casa Real. I had no expectations and was surprised to find such a pleasant hotel in such a small town. Staff was helpful and the people who helped take luggage out of the car and who helped me to my room did not have their hand out or hang around hoping for a tip (this might be because Mexicans are not big tippers). The room was clean and quiet, even though it is located on a busy street and it was the night of "El Grito." A restaurant is on the premises though I didn't eat there. Casa Real is a perfect place to stay if you are touring the area, and be sure to visit the Cactus Biosphere in nearby Cuicatlan -- it's an amazing area, but don't go at high noon (like I did) or your skin will feel like a cactus. .

Room Tip: choose a room overlooking the patio
