Stayed for 4 nights as part of our honeymoon in basque country.

Room was small but amazing view over the beach, very clean, and had everything we needed.

The staff were incredibly helpful, and went out of their way to help including booking our evening restaurants, bringing us tea and wine, to advising things to do.

Breakfast was also very good, with amazing views over the beach.

The hotel has found the right mix between historic character and modern needs.

Stayed in Bilbao the previous 3 nights in a five star hotel. This hotel was far better in all departments especially the staff.

A delightful hotel. The position is fantastic with the rooms practically suspended over the Bay of Biscay. We ate round the corner a wonderful restaurant. Breakfast next day very good and a free bottle of water to see us on our way. Would love to go back and trust the scaffolding poles outside the garage will have been removed when we do! They were also very kind to our dogs.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view!

We stopped in Getaria, just to look at the views and stroll the narrow streets and cobbled stairways of this romantic little village perched high on the rocky outcrop, with its calm sandy beach and harbour on one side and dramatic ocean surf beach on the other. Robina suggested that we look for a hotel, so we asked locals and they directed us up, away from the sea, back into the medieval heart of the town. We found Saiaz, a lovingly preserved stone facade with almost no signage, but a warm glow onto the alleyway. The Hotel sign promoted itself as a quiet place, a sanctuary.

We were lucky. A beautiful room on the top (3rd) floor with a panoramic view over the ocean. Spotless, with a tiny but efficient bathroom and a huge comfortable bed - nothing but the sound of waves breaking below.

The receptionist - in fact every staff member we met - gave us a warm welcome. They put up with our clumsy attempts at French, were genuinely interested that we had come all the way from New Zealand, wanted to engage when we wanted to, or left us alone to enjoy. I've stayed in very flash hotels where the staff could have taken lessons from these good people.

So we've got noting but fond memories of room 31, and the fresh, sunny breakfast next morning. I thoroughly recommend a night or two at this hotel.

Room Tip: We loved room 31 - spectacular view,

Stayed one night here en route to the ferry at Santander. A really charming hotel in a cobbled street.Beautifully restored, with very tasteful public areas. The rooms are charming and some with excellent views. In room 36 one drawback here is the bathroom; almost to discourage use of the bath there is a rain shower with side jets, but this looks as though it was added after the bathroom was installed. There is a fixed glass screen so you need a long arm to reach the shower on/off. The water feed to the bath wasnt working, nor the handheld shower and there are no handles on the side of the bath or on the wall to facilitate the 'not so agile' older folks to get in and out. The non slip dots to stand on do not extend the length of the bath so for the aforementioned folk it is a potential slip hazard! However lovely staff and a great and peaceful place to stay in this lovely town.

We travel a great deal, notably in Spain, and our standards are pretty high.
This hotel met all our requirements, from check-in to check-out.
The staff are engaging and very efficient; everywhere is beautifully decorated and maintained; and the standard of cleanliness in the room beyond reproach.
The view out over the ocean is almost too good: it took a deal of effort to go out and about in the village - but when we did there's no shortage of really good places to eat and drink.

We will certainly come back!
Les gersois.

Room Tip: We had a glimpse of the rooms overlooking the street, and they look really good - well-furnished and spacious; and super-clean like everywhere else in this lovely hotel. But if you are coming to this part of the world it's obviously to be near the sea and so you absolutely must book one of the rooms which face towards the sea - the views are stunning! The photos are for real!
