We stopped in Getaria, just to look at the views and stroll the narrow streets and cobbled stairways of this romantic little village perched high on the rocky outcrop, with its calm sandy beach and harbour on one side and dramatic ocean surf beach on the other. Robina suggested that we look for a hotel, so we asked locals and they directed us up, away from the sea, back into the medieval heart of the town. We found Saiaz, a lovingly preserved stone facade with almost no signage, but a warm glow onto the alleyway. The Hotel sign promoted itself as a quiet place, a sanctuary.

We were lucky. A beautiful room on the top (3rd) floor with a panoramic view over the ocean. Spotless, with a tiny but efficient bathroom and a huge comfortable bed - nothing but the sound of waves breaking below.

The receptionist - in fact every staff member we met - gave us a warm welcome. They put up with our clumsy attempts at French, were genuinely interested that we had come all the way from New Zealand, wanted to engage when we wanted to, or left us alone to enjoy. I've stayed in very flash hotels where the staff could have taken lessons from these good people.

So we've got noting but fond memories of room 31, and the fresh, sunny breakfast next morning. I thoroughly recommend a night or two at this hotel.

Room Tip: We loved room 31 - spectacular view,

Stayed one night here en route to the ferry at Santander. A really charming hotel in a cobbled street.Beautifully restored, with very tasteful public areas. The rooms are charming and some with excellent views. In room 36 one drawback here is the bathroom; almost to discourage use of the bath there is a rain shower with side jets, but this looks as though it was added after the bathroom was installed. There is a fixed glass screen so you need a long arm to reach the shower on/off. The water feed to the bath wasnt working, nor the handheld shower and there are no handles on the side of the bath or on the wall to facilitate the 'not so agile' older folks to get in and out. The non slip dots to stand on do not extend the length of the bath so for the aforementioned folk it is a potential slip hazard! However lovely staff and a great and peaceful place to stay in this lovely town.

We travel a great deal, notably in Spain, and our standards are pretty high.
This hotel met all our requirements, from check-in to check-out.
The staff are engaging and very efficient; everywhere is beautifully decorated and maintained; and the standard of cleanliness in the room beyond reproach.
The view out over the ocean is almost too good: it took a deal of effort to go out and about in the village - but when we did there's no shortage of really good places to eat and drink.

We will certainly come back!

Room Tip: We had a glimpse of the rooms overlooking the street, and they look really good - well-furnished and...

This is an outstanding small hotel. Situated on a medieval sreet it has a beautiful medieval facade but it is all renoated inside where the rooms and common areas pleasantly surprised us with breathtaking views of the ocean. The ocean view rooms have wall to wall windows that are basically perked over the ocean beach. The hotel is very tastefully renovated and the common rooms and corridors have beautiful period furniture, carpets and chandeliers. The hotel rooms and bathrooms are modern, and there is wi fi available. Breakfast is quite plentiful and tasty for a continental style. The hotel is on one of the three main streets of Getaria which is a small fishing village whre everything is close in walking distance. Once can get to one of the two beaches in less than 5 minutes as long as you do not mind using a few stairs. The village is full of wonderful places to eat that specialize in seafood. In the village there is a modern museum of the Balenciaga, it is worth visiting it.

Room Tip: The rooms towards the ocean view offer an outstanding view. One must enjoy listening to breaking oce...

We had a wall full of windows which looked out on the ocean and opened so you hear the sound of the sea morning, noon and night. The staff was exceptionally accommodating, especially when we wanted to stay an additional night. They squeezed us in and we couldn't have felt more at home. The bed is comfortable, the shower had three different functions and the place was immaculately clean when we arrived. There is a great communal balcony to enjoy a glass of wine on while watching the ocean and the breakfast spread in the morning offers great variety and is delicious. They also offer parking, which is a major bonus in this small seaside town and the location is superb, so unless you're going wine tasting, there is little need for a car anyways!

Room Tip: Request a seaside view. It's worth the extra cash.

A lovely medieval hotel with charm and great service. Views from the restaurant and terrace are stunning.
Only downside was the glass door which led from the bedroom to the bathroom which offered no privacy and were also very easy to walk into as I found out. However, the hospital in zarautz was brilliant and for overall quality, this place was gorgeous.

We booked 2 rooms for our family and hotel were very accommodating in allocating specific rooms we requested. Our Junior Suite 26 was impressively roomy with great view over one of the town's beaches. The other room 24 overlooked the street and whilst comfortable the children were disturbed at times by the quite loud church bells.
Rooms are furnished stylishly and cleaned well.
Breakfast was good and served in a pleasant room with a sea view.
Staff went out of their way to help us whenever they could with our choice of activities and restaurants and encouraged one of the children in his Spanish speaking.
There are 2 pre-bookable parking spaces. Be warned that the hotel is on a road wide enough for one car only so reversing is sometimes necessary.
Getaria is a lovely small town with 2 sandy beaches and plenty of restaurants yet it is off the beaten tourist trail.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms overlooking the sea rather than the street,
