We found the Cristobal Balenciaga Museum to be an excellent museum. At the start of the visit one should take a look at the video that explains how Balenciaga designed his dresses. This video is very good. The samples of dresses in the museum that he designed has a very wide range and some were spectacular.

This must have cost a fortune to the taxpayers. Disappointing. Very well presented but a limited show.
There is a temporary exhibition of photographs of Balenciaga designs worn by famous actresses. The quality of the prints is really not up to standards.

How some one convinced other people to let them build a museum like this in a small village like Getaria is a mystery to me. This is a really wonderful place. It reminded me of a great exhibit we were fortunate enough to have visit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art called "Roberto Capucci: Art into Fashion." I was especially taken with the displays in the last room dedicated to Balenciaga's own work. The computer animations that showed how the pieces were constructed were fascinating. They really helped you see the architectural talent the underlay his work. All in all, well worth a rainy afternoon.

Visiting a museum may be boring for a few women like my wife, who instead considered the Balenciaga Museum as the best she enjoyed in all her life. The clothes and their history over the decades of Balenciaga activity are a special art for sure, linking style and beauty to business and (nearly) daily life. The Museum has huge spaces and great audio-visuals, and it is an ideal place to visit when the Atlantic rain is preventing you to enjoy the Getaria beaches.

This huge black piece of modern architecture looks a little incongruous set on the edge of a village that thrives on anchovy fishing. However it is fascinating in its design, and houses a fabulous collection of Balenciaga's work. My fashion hating husband visted mainly because was dragged along by me, though he does have an interest in modern architecture. However he actually enjoyed looking at the exhibits, including initial sketches, fabulous garments and video footage of the catwalks. Apparently many men visit the museum under protest, but end up enjoying themselves!
One particularly interesting room had computer generated displays showing how garments were made up from their various pattern pieces. The only disappointment was that the cafe was closed.
