“An unusual museum of art”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

Visiting a museum may be boring for a few women like my wife, who instead considered the Balenciaga Museum as the best she enjoyed in all her life. The clothes and their history over the decades of Balenciaga activity are a special art for sure, linking style and beauty to business and (nearly) daily life. The Museum has huge spaces and great audio-visuals, and it is an ideal place to visit when the Atlantic rain is preventing you to enjoy the Getaria beaches.

“Fascinating Building”
Reviewed June 7, 2013

This huge black piece of modern architecture looks a little incongruous set on the edge of a village that thrives on anchovy fishing. However it is fascinating in its design, and houses a fabulous collection of Balenciaga's work. My fashion hating husband visted mainly because was dragged along by me, though he does have an interest in modern architecture. However he actually enjoyed looking at the exhibits, including initial sketches, fabulous garments and video footage of the catwalks. Apparently many men visit the museum under protest, but end up enjoying themselves!
One particularly interesting room had computer generated displays showing how garments were made up from their various pattern pieces. The only disappointment was that the cafe was closed.

“A true gem of fashion in a Basque fishing port”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

Balenciaga is one of the great classics of fashion and he was born to a poor family in this fishing port in Basque country. His father was a fisherman, his mother a seamstress, and he became world renowned for his classic and innovative designs. What a surprise to find such a fabulous museum in this tiny port half an hour from Donastia-San-Sebastian. The architecture is fabulous, the staff warm and welcoming, and the displays - whether special or the permanent collection absolutely first class. Begin with a 25 minute video - so well done - about Balenciaga's life and work, and even if you knew nothing about him before, you are well prepared to get the most from the displays. A true gem.

“Who knew this could be a guy thing......”
Reviewed June 1, 2013 via mobile

Talk about cultural disconnect. In this tiny fishing village on the northern coast of Spain you find a museum dedicated to a world famous fashion icon. Balenciaga was born and buried in this village. Exhibits demonstrate what a powerhouse he was from 1940's-1960's in women's "haute couture". Dragged there by my fashionista wife, I still managed to enjoy the 1.5 hour visit because of the professionalism demonstrated in curating this exhibit.

You will love the exhibits in this museum and its architecture is fabulous. An historical overview of Balenciega's work, in a magnificent building that contrasts with the local architecture.
