“One of the best in the resort”
Reviewed April 12, 2007

My boyfirend and I stayed at The Oceanique in Colva for 2 weeks. I was slightly nervous about Goa as I had never been before but my boyfirend had been to Colva four times before so my thoughts were that it couldn't have been that bad and all in all it wasn't!

We got a taxi from the airport which was much quicker than the First Choice bus. It took 20 mins in the taxi rather than about an hour on the bus and only cost about £5

When we arrived at The Oceanique the staff at reception were great, especially Debbie! Really friendly and welcoming. The room was basic but clean and spacious with a balcony overlooking the very quiet pool (always nice). Rooms are serviced every day to a good standard and everything in the room worked perfectly; A/C, fan, Sat TV, fridge, safe etc.

The pool wasn't huge but a perfect size for the hotel and all it's occupants. It was never busy in the whole 2 weeks of being there and there was always a pool attendent around to get you an umbrella and clean towels. The only thing about the pool is that it does need new sunbeds, the ones we had had seen better days, but, it was no great shame!

We stayed on a B&B basis which was best as the food wasn't great! The breakfast was fine with eggs to order, cereal, toast and basic breakfast items, i.e. sausage, beans etc.

Eating out is cheap which we did on a lunch time and evening. At lunch it would probably cost you £3 for two with drinks and in the evening probably about £6 with drinks for two! Good places to eat are The Tate Sports Bar (5 min walk), Cajis (3 min walk - great steaks!), Silver Spoon (2 min walk - great naans!), Bambooze (10 min walk - good pizza!) and The Pentagon (15 min taxi ride - great seafood!). Don't be worried about the 'Delhi Belly' i'm the worst for worrying and I was fine - just stay clear of ice creams from bicycles! When we arrived everyone raved about Mickeys on the main Colva street, we went one night and never returned it was awful but maybe they were having a bad night! Wouldn't recommend Kentukee just off the beach either; the waiters weren't in a rush to get rid of the cats and dogs from around your feet, not pleasant whilst eating! But whats two bad restaurants when theres an abundance of other great ones!

Another tip! The First Choice excursions are expensive! Go with a taxi driver from outside the hotel and there just as good and save you a fortune! Antonio is good. For £30 we saw the elephants, rode them and washed them (aswell as them washing us in the river!), went to the Cashew factory and the spice plantation with a lunch and drinks! You pay about £30 each with First Choice! The dolphins at Benaulim beach are good too! Every morning at about 8:30 with 'Peles' costs £6 each but of you don't see any you don't pay.

The only complaint I would have is that Colva itself isn't great. Wild dogs, pigs and cows just roaming. It's a bit of a shock when you first get there but after a while you do get used to it and its fine. The notorious smell of fish is about sometimes as well as they dry it in the street but only really in the mornings.

Would I go back yes, it's a place full of character. Go to South Goa its much less developed than the North apparantly. All in all a good holiday; good value, cheap place, nice weather, good activities. Say hi to Toff, Emma, Sophie and Dan at the Tate!

Booked this hotel via the First Choice website. It was my fifth time in Goa having stayed at the Heritage at Arrosim Beach on previous occassions. My son and I arrived on 29th December 2006 in order to be there for new year. First impressions were laughable as upon entering the inner lawn and pool area, we were greeted by the sight of an eight foot snowman and loads of Christmas paintings on all the hotel windows! Evidence that the staff really made the effort to keep up the festive season.
Generally we were pleased with the hotel, the pool area was never crowded in fact there were times when we were the only people there and it was like having your own private pool. The pool attendant was always there with towels and the best thing was that there was no music playing all day like some hotels I have stayed in where they seem to think that you should be bombarded with pop music all day. Not so here, just perfect peace and quiet.
We were A/I and it has to be said that some days the food was a little disappointing. Breakfast was the same thing every morning with only one cereal (cornflakes) porridge that was more like gruel and various cooked offerings of dubious quality. We rarely ate lunch but the couple of times that we did, I wasn't impressed.
Dinner was a little better, again not impressed although the food that they put on for new years eve was supurb, they really pulled the stops out on that one. This showed that they are capable so why not a little more effort all the time.
The resort itself does take a bit of getting used to and at times you can smell the fish drying in the sun but the area does have a buzz about it and we loved it. The locals are fantastic and new years eve was quite mad but a great experience with the fireworks and parties on the beach. We used to use a beach shack called the Silver Spoon where you could use the sunbeds all day as long as you had a few drinks and something to eat. All the guys working there were fantastic, especially Martin, as was the food. Don't be put off by these shacks as the food is perfectly safe, absolutely delicious and the whole day will only cost about a fiver for two.
The place to eat in the evening is Mickeys which is in Colva, about a ten minute walk from the hotel. You usually have to wait for a table as it is always full with as many locals eating there as there is tourists, always a good sign! They serve food to die for and again it is not exspensive. The bill for six of us including beers and spirits was about £27 sterling and we did over order with the food.
Would I go again? Yes I probably would but possibly not A/I next time. The hotel is good, the staff are exellent, rooms are clean and well serviced if a little short on storage space and it is so peaceful. Unfortunately it is let down a little by the standard of the food

Just returned from a two week holiday in Goa, staying at the Oceanique in Colva. The hotel was fine and of a good standard, clean and nicely appointed. The rooms were spacious but with limited storage. The rooms were cleaned daily to a good standard, the bathroom was excellent. All the equipment worked i.e. air con, fridge, sat TV. The pool area was never that busy, with the pool boy looking after everyone with two towels per sun lounger! We had book fully inclusive but only eat on an evening twice, not because the food was no good, we always had breakfast and lunch when we had a day around the pool, no it was more that the food was so good and cheap everywhere else. We got a drinks included in the package but the range and quality were limited, ok if you like Kingfisher beer and local spirits with coke/mixer. Overall we were happy with the hotel and its location in relation to the beach and shopping area of Colva.
Our biggest disappointment was the standard of the resort and beaches of Colva. The local industry is fishing and the beach is were the local fishermen ply their trade, nothing wrong with that we have spent two previous holidays in Goa up at Calengute, its what happens once the fish have been landed. Hundreds and thousands of fish are laid out all over the beach sun drying and the smell is unbelievable!! If you don't like the smell of drying fish this resort is no good for you. Also you have to like living in and around a rubbish tip, where ever you look the are piles and piles of rubbish all over the place, with pigs, cattle, dogs and other creatures feeding of the mounds of rubbish at the sides of the road not just out in the country areas but in the town centre it self.
The people are lovely even the shop keeper who constantly pester you to 'Come look in my shop' but it is such a same the area stinks of fish are rotting rubbish.
I love Goa but Colva will not be seeing me again unless it cleans up its act.
