We travelled as a group of 4 (three generations of one family) and were very excited to see our holiday home, as the pictures on the web and reviews on other sites were very favourable. What we found, although nice, fell short of our expectations and was disappointing on a number of levels.
The location is excellent, if like us you like things rustic. The villa is away from the towns, away from noise and the only sounds are the crickets and the sheep! The access road gave the suspension on the hire car a serious workout every time we went along it.
Access is via some very large and impressive gates and the villa is one imposing sight as you approach, but then things start to look less impressive than the website offers and experiences with the owner were reminiscent of a day out at Fawlty Towers.
The villa is, in a word, tired. Lights don't work, the gate electrics are dismantled, facilities are repaired and patched up, plug sockets hanging off the wall and plants overgrowing the terrace. The dishwasher was so soiled that we had to clean it up so that we could use it and cooking utensils / pans etc were few and far between. The kettle, considering this is a villa for up to 10 people, only held enough water for 2 cups, which was very frustrating. We thought that a bit of television would lift our spirits, but every channel was in German, so useless for us.
The owner of this villa is also German and, when she arrived to "read the electric meter", was annoyed that we were not fluent and able to understand her irate instructions. We eventually had to telephone the parent company (in Germany) to speak to someone who could translate, all at our expense. She than stated that she had a photo of the electric meter as she could not get out of her car, which we had to accept was accurate. At the end of the week we were presented with a bill for almost £70 of electricity based on this reading, which was ridiculous considering we did not use any air conditioning, the washing machine and only cooked basic meals. The pool lights and driveway lights always came on, as they were on a timer, but we did not want these on and had no control over them.
The beds in the villa are rock hard and we all had difficulty in sleeping on them. Eventually we resorted to sleeping on the floors as this was more comfortable. There were no spare pillows / bedding available which could have made things better, so sleepless nights were the nom for the week.
The pool and pool area were good, although the sun loungers again were very uncomfortable as they had crossbars in all the wrong places and gaps in the mesh covers, so relaxing on the grass became our usual haunt. The open areas were good, and a great place to play ball games etc. but there was distinct lack of amenities there, apart from a poorly maintained table-tennis table with broken and battered bats.
Other villas we have stayed in have used a system that, if there are non-perishable foods left at the end of the stay (for example salt and pepper, sugar, herbs and spices etc) these are left for the next rental and once the current renter has come to the end of their stay they leave for the next one, and so on. When we arrived the villa had been picked clean and there was absolutely nothing in the cupboards, not even a grain of salt, which just felt very unwelcoming, a feeling which remained throughout our stay.
