What would you like me to say, that it was fab!. Well it wasn't. Firstly, we struggled to find the hotel, poorly sign posted, confusing directions, maybe i was losing the will to live!

We dined at the hotel on the first night and because we were slightly late for dinner we were virtually ignored by the staff. The meals are certainly nothing to write home about and are expensive for what you get. The problem is that many of the local restaurants are closed at this time and you don't get much of an alternative, and they're very medeocre, apart from one, sorry, can't remember the name,( can't have been that good then eh! )

I would say that the hotel is fairly pleasant, but someone needs to sack the staff and start from scratch, it would be such a different place.

So, would I go back, nope! not a chance, I was extremely disappointed. Maybe it works for some people, but not me.

This is a nice hotel in a beautuful garden with good access to the mountains of Gran Canaria but the staff attitude ruined our enjoyment . There is a meaness of spirt here, on arriving slightly late for a pre arranged dinner, we were rushed through three course in 20mins. At breakfast we were shouted at, charges 6 euros for two boiled eggs, told we were late for breakfast at 9.30 when breakfast was advertised until 10.30. Meals were mean and rushed and we were hassled out of the dining room before 8.30pm, "go to the lounge I'm tired". The lounge was freezing no fire was lit despite a nice fireplace, the "honestly" wasn't stocked and even getting a cup of tea was a hassle. The local town is pretty dead except for market day and the restaurants not very inviting. I wouldn't recommend this place.

We spent five nights here and had a great time. The hotel is extremely quiet and laid back, with a lovely courtyard garden. The pool area is a great place to sit in the sun, surrounded by orange trees and nicely sheltered.

Our room was well-equipped - with hairdryer, lighted makeup mirror, comfortable chairs, etc - and interestingly decorated with plenty of lighting, but rather lacking in natural light and with a very dark ceiling. No doubt this is welcome in high summer! The lounge has a kettle to make hot drinks, and an honesty bar.

The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, some speaking good English. Twenty words of pidgin Spanish was helpful both at the hotel and elsewhere in this part of the island, which is non-touristy and where English is by no means universal. We had no problems with the owner but can imagine that she doesn't suffer fools gladly...

Breakfast was excellent - freshly squeezed juice, fresh bread, lots of nice cheese, dried fruit and nuts. Dinner was fine but a bit unexciting, and the local restaurant opening hours were a bit eccentric!

There is lots of great walking and scenery within about 30-45 minutes' drive. Vega di San Mateo is pleasant enough but there's not much there. Las Palmas - about 40 minutes' drive away - is well worth a few hours and has good shops and restaurants.

There is a bus stop on the main road about fifteen minutes' walk away with a service going up into the national park, but suspect life without a hire car would be quite restrictive.

  • Liked — Quiet, the orange grove, the pool area, friendly staff, magnificent breakfast in bright dining room
  • Disliked — Lack of natural light in the room, one or two things in the room not working

"Laid back service with attention to detail. Very relaxing"Hotel!!. We enjoyed the beautiful building and gardens, and the peace and quiet. Spent a very lazy week mostly sitting by the pool in the shade of a palm tree. On the first night the communal dinner was a nice experience.... Other nights we had the dinner outside, the options for eating out were never as good as eating in, local restaurants either shut or empty (early january). Dramatic walk to Cruz de Tejeda provided a contrasting cooler walk. Jaime the receptionist spoke good English and was very friendly and helpful, local to the area with tips for places to visit and eat.
The location is the ideal place to discover the nature of Gran Canaria!!

This hotel is what it's called: a rural hotel. It has the atmosphere of an old country house, featuring a nice and well-maintained courtyard with fruit trees around which the 8 rooms, the bar, and the dining room are located. The hotel is set in a quiet village called La Lechuza, which has absolutely nothing to offer. The bigger town San Mateo is a few kilometers down the road, but doesn't have much either, except for a good supermarket and one or two cafetarias.

Whether or not it's a good idea for you to stay in this hotel really depends on what you want to get out of your holiday. If you want to explore the nature of the interior of the island and do some nice hikes with beautiful panoramic views then this hotel is an excellent base and will put you in the right mood. The hotel is small scale and quiet, beds are of good quality, breakfast and dinner are simple but tasteful (and 18 euros for a 3 course meal is a good deal by any standard), and there's free parking on the hotel premises or in the village. If you are mainly interested in the sea, want to go out at night, or don't have a rental car then this is probably not the best place to stay. It is possible to travel up and down every day from the coast (30-45 mins drive), but the roads are very windy, narrow and slow so wouldn't recommend.

  • Liked — The rural location and atmosphere
  • Disliked — The surrounding towns and villages are completely dead

My boyfriend and I spent 4 nights in Hotel Rural Las Calas. We wanted to spend a nice holiday, away from the crowds. The buildings are very nice and the room was original and beautiful. Also the salon and the other common places where nice. The swimming pool is very very small (too small to swim) and next to the parking.

The service was very disappointing. The director of the hotel was so unfriendly that it was impolite. I had the impression she was tired of having guests in her hotel. When I arrived she said almost nothing, she showed me only my room and put (literally) a paper with rules in my hands (extra charge if you want to change the towels every day, extra charge if you leave earlier, do not put your own drinks in the fridge of the room, do not eat in the room, etc…). The rules where written in a quite aggressive way and because nobody in the hotel speaks a word of English I thought it was a language problem, but the German translation was even more rude. The director only spoke 2 times to me: to tell me to read the rules and to give me the bill. She spoke 1 time to my boyfriend: to reprimand him because he didn’t close the gate fast enough.

The breakfast was just acceptable: a fresh smoothie, tea, coffee, bread (not fresh), cake (not fresh), cornflakes (not fresh) and cheese etc… The woman that served the breakfast was very nice and helpful.

The environment (San Mateo) is nice but the hotel is far away from everything. It is a 50 min drive to the airport and without car you can almost not reach the hotel. Wherever we wanted to go, it always took us a lot of time.

Conclusion, I would not recommend this hotel. It is very expensive for what you get and it really shocked me to be treated so bad and impolite.

  • Liked — The nice room
  • Disliked — The impolite service - the breakfast was not fresh

We spent a weekend at the hotel at the end of February. The hotel itself is a delight with attention given to every detail. Unlike other tripadvisor reviewers we found the bedrooms warm and comfortable. Magui greeted us with no enthusiasm, presenting us with a typed 'what not to do' list and asking for credit card details within minutes of arrival. As she speaks no English and we no Spanish, a little charm on her part would have gone a long way. We dined in both nights - a big mistake the other guests on night one having made themselves scarce for night 2! Dinner was a hasty three course - soup, passable entre and dessert, followed by one small cup of coffee - no refill offered. Indeed on night 2, the waitress removed the unused place settings from the table while we and our fellow guest were still eating. We only just managed to stop her from taking away our half full bottle of wine! The meal over before nine and no life or fire or anything else in the public room, we had very early nights! Continental breakfast on day one was good, but day two's seemed to consist of what was left from the day before.
Finally the hotel though beautiful in itself is in a very unpretty area, parking and access extremely tight .Barking dogs (not the hotel ones who were gorgeous) scooter and traffic noises spoiled the peaceof the lovely garden area.
All in all a very disappointing weekend in the middle of our 2 week holiday. We do not recommend it.
