“Exceptional Hotel in Gran Canaria”
Reviewed October 23, 2013

I had the great fortune of visiting one of the best hotels I have even stayed at. A converted farm half way up Gran Canaria, which was perfectly located for walkng the numerous trails on top of the island.

Every room was large and very clean, staff were very friendly and food was good.

A beautiful place to stay in a beautiful part of the island.

Value for money was fantastic, I will definately stay her next time I am on the island. The green hills were outstandingly beautiful and contrasted with the desert like landscape on the coast.

Room Tip: All rooms are totally different and are large with modern conveniences. They are placed around a del...

On arrival the lady had us down as a party of 3 when it was 4 of us, eventually they found a travel cot for our daughter and squeezed it into the tiny room. The garden was pretty with orange trees, there were lots of antiques and it was very rural. We booked the Christmas evening meal but she refused to cater for our daughter! There was no where for our daughter to sit so we had to share our own very expensive meals with her and there wasn't anything for her to drink! It was the same at breakfast they refused to set a place for her or get a high chair and when I asked for some fruit juice for her they said it had run out. This went on every single day, the owner made that fact clear that she didn't like children! Ok if I had looked closely at the feedback I would see it was mainly couples and it was a quiet place but there were other children staying. If you are quiet and child free this place would be ideal but don't take your children there.

Room Tip: Make sure you know what room you are getting first and if you book through an agent, keep contacting...

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a comment and send us your valuable feedback that motivates us to improve. The hotel disposes of rooms suitable for families and the restaurant has high chairs for the youngest. We very much regret that your stay at our hotel was not to your satisfaction and like to apologize for the inconveniences caused.

This is a wonderful place to have a quiet vacation in Gran Canaria. The rooms are beautiful, the gardens really lovely and the pool area comfortable and very pleasant. The staff was very pleasant and helpful when we needed them without being too overbearing. It is fairly straightforward to get there following the directions, but one of the charms is precisely that it is off the beaten path!! We had a wonderful time and will go back next time we need a break!!!

This hotel was booked for us by a Travel Company specialising in Walking Holidays. I was a little concerned about the mixed reviews.
We had no problem finding the place. It was signed once we got to La Lechuza. We also had good typed instructions from our holiday company. The hotel was on the SatNav although TomTom tried to take us down an unpassable road (It did this several times in Gran Canaria). I found the wooden gates awkward to drive the hire car through. I live in the UK. It was a LEFT hand drive car and I had only just picked it up from the airport. There is a tight turn off a single track road which is a little awkward.
Once there we were greeted by Marilyn and Michael who were very helpful. It was hot and we were grateful for the cool beers in the minibar in the room. We had pre-booked one meal and had a second meal at the hotel 2 nights later. The 3 course meal was charged at 20 Euros for an adult and 10 euros for a child (Under 13). The food was fine. There were a selection of wines from 10-17euros a bottle. We ate out on our second night but as this involved a drive out and back in the dark we only did this the once. One couple chose to walk to San Mateo (~45mins) as they did not have a car.
The garden and grounds are lovely and relaxing. There is a nice lounge/reading room although we didn't really use it.
Breakfasts were simple. The orange juice was lovely. There is a selection of bread, cheeses, cooked meats and some cereals. There were also a few yoghurts and plenty of tea/coffee. Breakfast was not until 0900 -although you could go in a little earlier. I can see how this would irritate people if you want an early walk. Howeverwe had to drag our teenage son out of bed at ~0845 each morning so the 0900 breakfast was not an issue for us. Packed lunches were available from ~8euros. We used them twice and were happy with them. There are plenty of walks within a relatively short distance of the hotel and I would recommend the hotel to anyone who wants to walk then have some peace and quiet in the evening.

Room Tip: Room 4 had 2 additional beds in a mezzanine. However the ladders were very steep and not very secure...

We had a great time at this hotel. Yes, the big wooden gates at the entrance might put some people off if they hadn't expected it, but our travel company told us to look out for them. The manager who welcomed us was very friendly and spoke excellent english and our room (no 4) was excellent - large, high ceilinged, with a large bathroom with heated towel room and radiator. Even though it was January we didn't need the heating on. We had dinner on the first night - a set meal of soup followed by beef and potatoes then a custard pudding. It was nicely cooked, clearly local style, and large portions. Breakfast was simple, with meats, cheese, breads, cakes, some dried fruit and juice. Breakfast and dinner times suited us (breakfast at 9am, although you were allowed in at 8.45, and dinner at 7pm) although I can see that it wouldn't suit everyone. There's no bar, just a help-yourself kitchen so if nightlife is what you're looking for this probably isn't for you. Great for walkers though, as San Mateo is well-placed for walks and a good chill-out place. Wi-fi worked pretty well for us too.

Room Tip: We had room 4 which was excellent, but we did hear from other people that some rooms weren't so...

We spent one week (after Christmas, New Year Eve). Compound is very nice; room was well equipped, lovely.
But
Place is extremely hard to find in darkness. We arrived late evening. It took a long time to find the place without signs. Owner knew that we are coming, but the gate was closed. We almost lost hope ringing and knocking before somebody came and opened the door.
We got new year eve dinner - and it was most terrible food I ever got (Ok, not considering soviet-style diners during my childhood). There were international guests around table. After horrible food we gathered at cold lobby with only champagne bottle we got with this extremely expensive dinner. Everybody with feeling like we were cheated…
It was same food during breakfast – just two kinds of cheese, ham and honey.
Extremely bad service. Nobody cares, staff seems not do understand nothing but Spanish.
There was no possibility to use pool area, because weather during our stay was terrible. It was extremely cold and damp week. By the way, just 10 km drive away was sunshine. It seemed that the clouds liked just this side of mountain. Of course, hotel cannot help with climate. But we had to beg every day owner in order to turn on heaters...
Payment was higher as we booked (first and last time during our travel experience at different countries). Owner pretended not to understand problem, so we paid.
What a pity that such a lovely place has rude manager and indifferent stuff!
PS. We made friends with German couple who has same opinion. During nights we spent together time at lobby-room. Very nice room indeed, but we had to put on all our warm clothes and sit as close to stove as we could. And, of course, every evening we had to beg for wood for stove…

We stayed 5 nights here and whilst the room was very confortable and spacious and the grounds were pleasant there is not a true welcoming atmosphere.
The Main Waitress/ maid etc, was very helpful and spoke good english, but the insistence by the owner that breakfast could not be taken before 9am is odd in area that is for walkers who wish to get out promptly.
The breakfast was fine but the evening meals were simple without any choice.

Room Tip: A room near the lounge / bar area.
