“Not really a Parador more of a Motel 6”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2012

Just a very - or should I say extremely regular hotel. Shocked that it was a Parador. Rooms were clean, but not comfortable. Skip this Parador if you are a Parador person.
Lobby and surrounding area were dull and unimpressive. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't really good on any level.

Very nice parador in a beautiful region. Completely redone building. Large, very clean, rooms and bathrooms. Wonderful breakfast. Other meals are excellent, although the service is a little slow.

Modern, refurbished Parador conveniently situated near the motorway linking Madrid and Galicia in the vine-clad hills of Bierzo. The Parador is on the left just as you enter the town. Excellent all-new, spacious, comfortable room, very friendly and professional staff. A few negative points were (1) an emergency night-light far too strong made sleeping difficult; (2) we could not turn off the a/c (room 204); (3) limited parking, (4) you can hear the motorway if you open the window (but not if you don't); (5) the breakfast was fine but not quite up to the standard of several other paradors we have stayed in. It is a few minutes walk into the interesting (although in places rather dilapidated) small town of V de B where there are lots of churches, restaurants, bars, and pilgrims resting after a hard day on the road (it is on the Camino de Santiago). If you are not eating at the Parador then we recommend Meson Ancares, down steps to the left in the plaza Mayor. Great scenic country for walking and driving (e.g. try the entertaining route east then north via Cacabelos-Arborbuena-Villabuena-Burbia), and the famous Las Medulas Roman gold workings are not far away. Well worth a stop on a tour of Spain.

Stayed as a group of 16 walking part of the Camino. Recently renovated (very well) parador.
Lovely rooms, spacious, windows that open for fresh air, very quiet area ( unusal in Spain!). Wi-Fi available, but not 100% in room.
Meal for the group very disappointing, this seems to be a common problem in Spain however may be different for travelling as a couple / single.

It is OK but it isnt anything special. For one there is a highway nearby that wrecks the views; there is no garden...just a patch of grass next to the parking lot!; the staff is mixed: some helpful others not; there is a lot new suburban style development nearby...yuk. There is only one reason in my opinion for the average tourist to stay here and that is to visit Los Medulas, the Roman archeological park.

My wife and I stayed three nights beteen santiago and Santander. although rated as 3* it was excellent value. Nice room, no air conditioning, view over valley marred by motorway. Helpful staff and adequate brakfast and dinner. Easy walk into very intersting old town with excellent tourist information. Lovely town sqaure with tapas bars and many old churches. Within easy reach of Roman gold mines and celtic settlements.

  • Liked — value for money
  • Disliked — noise from motorway

We enjoyed the night at the parador, beds were really comfortable and the room was spacious. the private parking secured our car.
The village is really small and there's not much to do except to go to the wine cellar palacio de Arganza. teh wine is delicious and so cheap, a bottle of 1997 costs around 5 €! we bought 12 bottles. It's a family business and we visited the owner's mansion and saw the terrific barrels... they are really friendly and we higly recommend anybody to go and have a look and even taste it!
