This has to be THE best castle we have visited in Spain thus far ( and we’ve visited a few!) Not only because of the fortifications but the remains of the Citadel where the armies lived together with support networks, workshops & commerce. One could really envisage what ingenious methods they employed in difficult times and terrain. Also a once beautiful abbey church which showed a multi-screen video charting the history throughout time... so interesting. Well worth watching.
We ate OAP’s and got concession €3 pp normal entry €6 but worth it. Free entry to the Bishops Palace museum in Alcalá la Real if you retain your ticket!

We were driving from Granada to Cordoba and decided to take the scenic route instead of the freeway, and saw this fortress along N-432. Having just visited Granada, it was great to see this outpost between the Christian and Moorish kingdoms. The self-guided tour was informative, and the view of the countryside from the hilltop fortress was spectacular.

If you are on your route from Cordoba to Granada, do not miss this fortress. It is literally 5 minutes off your route, and it is totally worth seeking it out. It is the remains of an entire walled fortified city, which have been thoughtfully and cleverly restored. The information are really well done and there is a lot to learn, you really get a sense of what was life on the frontier. The views are also outstanding, with clear vision of some of the surroundings watch towers. A special mention to the beautiful and fascinating church (sadly partially destroyed by the Napoleon troops) with the visible graves underfloor.Try to see the video (on at certain times) in the church, it is quite evocative. With the Alhambra and the Mezquita, this is one of my best memories of Andalucia.

On our way from Cordoba to Granada, we stopped at Fortaleza de la Mota in the late afternoon. After the crowds of tourists at other castles and palaces that we visited in Sevilla and Cordoba, we savored exploring this castle with very few other people, enjoying the architecture, history, the late afternoon light and the views of the Sierra Nevadas. The audio guide is very good and helped us understand what we were seeing and what it was like so many years ago. Very glad that we stopped and explored!

If you're traveling between Cordoba and Granada this is a lovely way to spend two hours. The fortress is not really much different than others but it is still worth it. The abandonded church is facinating. The views are beautiful and the small city below is charming.
