This indoor market has two floors, housed in a 100 year old building. The top floor is almost all meat, either cooked or uncooked, with a few other dried goods and cheeses. It seems no part of the animal goes to waste and shoppers get to see exactly what they are buying and where it comes from. The lower floor includes fish, fruit, veg, bakeries, cheeses, dried goods and flowers. Everything is extremely fresh and the smells are interesting! Market opens 7am to 2pm most days, or until 3pm on Saturdays.

We stayed literally just opposite and it's a great place to go and see some fish (which is what we love) as it's really cheap and the selection is just incredible. Worth a visit if you're close

Now that my wife and I live in Alicante we are at the central Mercado almost every morning to do our shopping for the day. Our apartment is 1 block away on Sabio X so it is very convienent but what a palce to shop. Everyday its fresh produce, fresh seafood, fresh vegies & fruit and fresh baked goods. What a treat.
When you visit Alicante you must take an early morning visit to the Mercado, visit one of the bakeries and buy a couple of enpanadas at one of the bakeries. Further from the entrance the better.(Try the 3rd bakery stall on the right as you enter. An older gentleman usually there.)
If you are visiting from North America then be ready to be enlightened........this is what food is all about........fresh, natural, reasonably priced and flavour like you have never tasted before.
We start our day with enpanada, (tuna & onion) , some fresh fruit while we do our shopping and we are good till lunch.
Every Spanish city has a Central Mercado and it is one of the places we always visit and try to stay close to. We love our Mercado, love living in Alicante and hope that visitor's will take time to enjoy,

Find half an hour to visit Mercado Central of Alicante. You can buy there fresh fruit and different kinds of hams and sausages. There are also a few cafes around. The market is open from 7:30 a.m. till 2 p.m. except Sundays.
