Lots of paintings but not made that interesting to lay people like us. Never-the-less a whole host of mediterranean scenes etc.

A very nice permanent collection, and we also quite enjoyed the temporary collections that were there. It's free and worth visiting.

You’ll probably only need an hour or so at the most to go round this museum. Backpacks must be left at the desk and you cannot take photographs of the paintings. There is a coffee and a water vending machine and rest area. There are toilets in the museum.

The third floor exhibition space was being redone when we were there as there was only a small area of display which was finished in that section.

There are free leaflets available so you can get an idea of the most important works from the paintings pictured on these. Shame you can't take your own photos.

...but to change a daily routine, a visit to the MUBAG is always worth some time. You well get to see Alicante and surroundings with the eyes of local painter/artist Emilio Varela. Dive into the recent past and see the city's development. Perfect to go there on a rainy day or to start the late afternoon befor taking apero/tapas.

Some acronyms work and some - like MUBAG - don't. That said, this is an excellent gallery of 19th century provincial Spanish art. Much of the work on display was acquired as a result of a decision by Alicante Council to encourage the growth of a local artistic culture by giving aspiring young artists scholarships to study in Madrid and Paris. In return, these artists were required to present the town with examples of their graduate work, and so the collection was built up. Some of the work is a revelation, and it is well displayed. Highly recommended!
