Owner description: Set in the ancient heart of the city, opposite the monumental Basilica of Santa María, this imposing new building takes up an entire city block and encompasses the oldest civil construction in the city: the venerable Casa de La Asegurada, an outstanding example of Valencian baroque architecture built as a public wheat granary in 1685. Known as the MACA, the Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art is owned by the City Council and is one of Alicante's leading cultural venues. The construction and refurbishment project was designed by the architectural firm Sancho-Madridejos and funded by the Valencian Regional Government. It boasts a total floor space of 4680 m2 spread across four storeys and two basement levels, and features one temporary exhibition hall, four exhibition halls for the permanent collections, a library, teaching venues, an events hall, storerooms, workshops, plus quarters for security, administration and the like. The Museum's diaphanous spaces showcase its rich and varied collections of contemporary art according to highly rigorous museum programming in which conservation and education are given top priority.

“Very cool museum”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

Free entry and fascinating collection of art. We're not into modern art as such, but there were several pieces amongst the paintings, prints, photographs and sculptures that were interesting and engaging. Main signage is in Spanish, French & English so you can learn a bit about the collections. No photos allowed inside the building and back packs must be checked at the front door. Easy way to spend an hour out of the heat.

“Could be a great gallery”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

This gallery looked promising as it is home to the works of some great Spanish artists and housed in an airy, modern building. However, on entering, my heart sank at the presence of the surly man on reception who had the approachability of a bear with a toothache. I could not see any catalogues or information so went about touring the gallery. After taking a picture of an exhibit with my phone I was approached by a guard and told off. He then followed me round in case I did it again. Each floor had a guard whose job it was to make you feel as uncomfortable as possible. No pictures, no books, catalogue or even prints for sale; a shame. Although it is refreshing not to have the usual "exit through the gift shop" scenario, this was too much the other way. Rather tellingly, the staff seemed to outnumber visitors.

“The building and its contents are well worth seeing”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

This modern art museum is in a beautifully transformed and extended old building. Some modern art is lost on me but I liked several of the exhibits, including 3 works by Miro. Entry is free.
