“First time in Alicante - very impressed”
Reviewed April 26, 2014

I travelled to Alicante on business. It was raining and cold in the UK, on arrival it was 26 degrees. The welcome at the Melia was equally as warm. The reception staff were friendly and professional. I asked for a sea view, and I was impressed with the room. Very enjoyable stay!

Room Tip: Sea view is great off your own balcony

Last minute booking at this hotel.

Location is fabulous, right on marina with lovely restaurants and bars, great beach and lovely area to walk around.

Breakfast was superb but don't leave it until the end of the serving session as a bit manic.

3rd floor room, facing the marina, sun on the balcony on an afternoon which is lovely but air-conditioning was very poor. Room and bathroom very comfortable and clean.

Staff helpful but no facilities for guests who are flying out late afternoon/evening. We had to be out of our room by 12 noon and had to rinse off in the shower by the pool and get changed in the toilets as our flight wasn't until 10pm at night.

Concierge very helpful.

Room Tip: If you want sun in the afternoon, select marina view, sun in the morning you will need sea view. 3r...

This is my 2nd review of the Melia Hotel at Alicante - We don't normally go back to places we have been to before, but we enjoyed our stay here so much the first time that both my wife and I wanted to go back.

We stayed on the Level, which is the premier part of the Melia and is definitely worth the little extra that it costs. You get a private breakfast area for those on the Level, an ongoing lunch time and evening taps that lasts until about 10.00pm. Help yourself to drinks - no extra charge. Nice relaxed atmosphere - met some really nice people. And Alicante itself was great with its little streets, castle and wonderful beachfront. Everyone is totally safe.

The only downside - the air-condtioning broke down - no problem - they quickly found us an alternative and better room.

Will we go again - definitely - my wife is already talking about going back, possibly October this year or some time next year.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good - on one side you have a view of the beach and the castle, on the other side...

Just spent Easter weekend at the Melia Alicante. The location is superb on the doorstep of the beach and harbour. Our room and bed were large, bath wasn't in great condition but the bathroom itself was big. We got a really good deal so realised it wouldn't be a refurbished room. It was lovely and quiet at night. We were slightly disappointed we didn't have a room facing the beach but then found our harbour facing room meant we had the sun in the afternoon and evening. Breakfast's very busy depending on what time you go but when we went earlier it was fine. Some of the hot dishes like beans were only lukewarm, coffee was good. Pool area is small but who needs it when the beach is seconds away. There's a piano player in the lobby in the evening. We didn't use the hotel facilities really but for location this hotel was perfect.

My partner and I have just returned from this hotel after a five night stay. Overall we had a very enjoyable break but there are areas that could be improved upon:

Positives:
The hotel is in a great location with wonderful views and handy for the main Alicante attractions and nearby restaurants.

We stayed in room 3072 which overlooked the marina and at this time of year enjoyed sunshine late afternoon and evening.

Breakfasts were excellent with lots of choice and very good service.

Negatives:
We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis but chose to eat in the 'Terra' restaurant on one evening. The food was mediocre but the service was absolutely appalling. One bread roll each was offered (other diners received a choice of roll and additional rolls if wanted) but we got neither. We had to ask for oil and vinegar, which was begrudgingly brought and no offer of butter. After two very unremarkable courses we asked for the bill. After waiting for almost forty five minutes we got up and asked the head waiter for it. Not once did he speak to us and never asked if we enjoyed the meal. I have often eaten in Melia hotel restaurants and am part of the Melia loyalty rewards scheme. As a courtesy to the Melia group, we asked reception to contact the hotel manager for us, as we would not want any other diners to feel the way we did. We were told by a member of guest relations that the manager was not in work until Easter Monday and our comments would be passed on. We await the response with interest.

The outdoor swimming pool was freezing and there seemed to be a major shortage of sunbeds, particularly in the morning.

As a recent reviewer has mentioned, there is definite lack of information and signage could be improved upon.

But as first time visitors to Alicante we really enjoyed our visit and would stay at this hotel if we came back to the city. The location is superb and within easy reach of all amenities. We had a very enjoyable visit to Santa Barbara Castle and would definitely recommend Sale y Pepe and Familia y Amigos restaurants.

We deeply regret the inconvenience if our restaurant service did not reach your expectations. We will follow your constructive remarks in order to improve our services, but we would like to point out that our executive chef and his team work very hard every day, always trying to offer the best quality of food and a good variety as well in the breakfast buffet.

On the other hand, we appreciate your nice comments about our privileged location.

We stayed at the Melia Hotel, (7 nights from 4th April) in a junior suite with sea view and took the breakfast option which set us up for the days adventures. Lovely Hotel in a brilliant position on the harbour and seafront. Every option you could wish for available at breakfast, (special thanks to the omelette chef, a great guy), and nothing too much trouble for any of the staff. Great atmosphere and facilities.

Room Tip: sea view for sunrise - harbour for sunset

Merche, one of the receptionists should be the model for the others on Reception about the Hospitality industry, as there was a lack of information and some indifference by many of the others I tried to talk to. She, however, listened and was helpful and courteous which could not be said for all, so if everyone was trained to her level this review would have read 'Very Good.'
I did not really enjoy this Hotel very much despite its excellent location. It is after all a huge Hotel and I think one of the other reviewers hits the point by saying next time try a more characterful and smaller place if you want a happy memory of the stay.
One small point was the room service. Despite asking for soap (very small, so runs out) and bath gel I got them once over 5 nights and the room ran out of toilet paper, which must be a first for an International Hotel.
Also, if you book independently through an agent, beware, as the agents fee will mean you may not be given a sea view and may be asked for more money for one at Reception, so I advise you book direct with the Hotel so it is clear what you have paid. I heard endless conversations at reception of people being asked for more money for the sea view side. However, at the time of year I was there the sun was on the balcony on the harbour side all afternoon and evening and was very pleasant so I was pleased I had not paid more as it was very nice to have the light, although the view was not brilliant. (April) Fortunately I did not hear any noise not being there at a weekend.
The view from the Breakfast room is great (and I loved my trip up to see the castle.) More information and signs would be helpful. I only found out there was an indoor pool from the reviewers on here and missed that entirely.
