We travelled to Spain in May and June of 2009, staying on Las Ramblas in Barcelona, and in Alicante down the coast. The Melia Alicante borders the beach on one side, and the harbor on the other. I had read a review on Trip Advisor that the staff at the desk was not very friendly. I made up my mind that if that was the case, I was going to keep smiling all 6 days until they smiled back. It worked!...and continued to work until the last day. We were checking out, and needed to catch the train back to Barcelona (we drove down, but opted to take the train back. That's another story.) We had to return the beach towels every day, and we were always credited for the return. However, when checking out, we weren't credited for the last return. A different lady I hadn't seen all week was taking care of me. I wanted our receipt to say that we returned the towels, not just her say so. This was taking long, and I was becoming a bit impatient, knowing I had a cab and a train to catch. She handn't been exposed to my "charms(?)" all week, and almoat snarled at me.
The hotel itself is huge, but I was able to convince the reservationist online to give us a room with a view of the beach. What a great room and view! We could see the beach, the promenade, and the fort/castle on the hill. Great photos of that view. Would definitely return.
I had to choose a date below to submit my review, and I chose Feb., 2013, but it was really May-June, 2009.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the beach, promenade and castle, but the harbor side is also nice, wit...

Stayed at this hotel in October 2012 for 4 nights. It's a great hotel, staff friendly. I stayed on a mixture of business and pleasure. The city of Alicante is bustling and easy to walk around. We did not eat at the hotel, because there is so many restaurants close to the hotel. Yes, ok, probably the pool isn't in the best place, but the beach is next door. The beach is very clean and you can go quite far out in the sea as it shelves gently. We had a Junior Suite and chose a high floor based on previous reviews. Chose a sea view, and it was a good choice, especially in the morning when the sun was coming up. All in all a good hotel, with good facilities - toiletries in the bathroom, mini bar, etc.

Room Tip: As other travellers have said - ask for a high floor

Stayed at this hotel for long weekend in September 2012.It was a lovely hotel in a ideal location with lovely views and within walking distance for town centre and restaurants, word of warning don't eat on front street as food was garbage better to go streets behind.
We paid extra and stayed in level rooms which was worth it,you have open bar and snacks available morning till night,it's ideal as you can have a few drinks throughout day a few before going out for dinner and few on way to bed ideal.
Hotel has pool with sun beds which was small but fine and spa, never had dinner but food looked okay.
Would definitely go back to this hotel.

Room Tip: Level room are adult only and worth extra

Our biggest problem when we go away is that because it is not very often and I can only ask my parents to take the children for a few days before guilt hits us; we tend to choose perhaps a nicer hotel, or more luxurious one at least and the result has been that our 'expectation bar' is now quite high. The Melia's reception of us and subsequent help was first rate. we stayed on 'The Level' and were not disappointed. Free mini-bar was well received and sadly not abused! Facilities were what one would expect, yes, people reserved sunbeds but they were the minority and there were more than enough to go round. Lots of restaurants in the area, lots of shopping and a beach nearby, what more do you want? (And a Great breakfast!) We liked it that much, we're going back this September, something we do not normally do.

Room Tip: Harbour view or sea view, is just personal choice, both lovely!

Twelve months from our last visit, we returned to this hotel as we liked its location, room and view. Once again building work was taking place, but we are now aware that hotels will do reburbishment work in the quiet months of January/February. It may have stirred us at 8am but it wasn't really an issue.

We were given a large room although we'd booked a standard room and once again were pleased with our stay. I thought E10 was steep for a Jack Daniels in the bar, but there are so many cafes and restaurants within minutes, you are not tied to the hotel bar, although its service was excellent. Great trip, good hotel, Alicante and its people were lovely.
