We came by this cafe by chance and because of the setting decided to try it.
You will find it on a stairway to the plaza, the seating is at the top of the stairs and commands a partial view of the Castle above and the street below.
All the seats were taken but the waiter popped down the stairs and carried up another table.
They are the only bar on the plaza and seem to be able to utilise as much of the space as they wish.
With a little gentle background music we tucked in to some tapas. The food was mostly good and the staff very friendly. Personally I would avoid the pork in tomato but that is a matter of taste.
After requesting the (reasonable) bill the waiter added a complimentary cerveza to the table - a nice touch. Worth a visit.

“everything was top notch”

this was are favourite place for drinks and food. Alicante is a fantastic city. the people might take a while to get used to but once you put the effort in to speak spanish you will enjoy your holiday a lot more because a lot of the people in alicante have very poor english especially in restaurants and bars. it can be even hard to order a tea! without spanish. but that kind of basic spanish is easy to pick up , you ll be flying in a week.

back to mon cafe
the staff at mon cafe are genuine and very friendly. the owner is lewie and he is great craic, very sound. the drinks are so good there and cheap . a mojito :) is only E4 compared to other places which is E8. the food is delicious but it is mainly tapas that is served there . they do have 3 main courses there as well .
the location of the cafe is stunning because its situated up above a few flights of stairs beside a big spanish church and overlooking a busy street. some times he has music there.
we thought mon cafe was the best place for food.

i would not advise going to the big pirate ship for food its very expensive the food isnt worth the price and some of the staff are not really that friendly.

“Lovely little place, hidden away but so worth checking out”

We visited Mon Cafe on a recent trip to Alicante and loved it so much we went back for the next three nights. On the second evening there was a large spanish family celebrating some fmily occasion and indulging in delicious looking tapas dishes.

Mon Cafe is a small, family run venue. It is situated at the end of the street, just a few minutes walk from the town hall. It is approached to up a few steep steps and the outside tables are in the shadow of a lovely church where you can choose to sit outside in a relaxed unpretentious manner with wooden (but comfy chairs and tables) . The evening menu features a good choice and in particular the menu of the day is excellent value featuring either chicken, steak or fish with salad and fries. Nothing unusual you might feel, until it arrives...delicious with a superb salad (not the usual couple of salad leaves). We sampled the steak and chicken, both were fab and extremely reasonably priced. We also chose a bottle of house red wine which was a lovely rioja and also excellent value.

The atmosphere was so relaxed and pleasant that we decided to linger and finish off the evening at Mon cafe (there are a couple of soft furnished outside sofas to relax on) so ordered a spirit. We were amazed when the waiter left the glass and bottle on the table and we were invited to pour our own measures (in very large glasses I might add).

At the end of the evening we were also invited to help ourselves from the bottle of what I think is a type of aperitif....a very pleasant alcoholic herbal tasting liquer.

All in all, nothing was too much trouble, we were made to feel very much at home and enjoyed delicious freshly prepared, unpretentious, home cooked food at very reasonable prices......what's not to like?
