Santa Barbara Castle has everything you would expect, cannons, a palace, dungeons, a moat, the ruins of a small church and of course that famous lookout tower. From all around the walls you get the most fantastic views: a definite photo opportunity. And when you're tired of walking up and down steep paths, peering over cliff edges and pondering the places from where boiling oil was thrown, there are two café areas where you can take a break in the shade of pine trees.

The castle is free to visit and there are two entrance points. If you're feeling energetic you can walk along the road that winds around the back of the mountain, or if you're short of time you can drive. The easier way, incurring a small charge (but free if you are disabled or an EU senior citizen) is via an elevator going up through a tunnel carved out of the rock. You find the entrance opposite the Postiguet beach area.

Lovely views on top of Alicante. Walking down stop at La Ereta Restaurant, delicious sea food! The best in province of Valencia.

Castillo de Santa Barbara is probably the best tourist attraction in Alicante. The lift to the top costs just 2.50 euros. You are free to roam around the castle at your own leisure, the views over the sea and the city are incredible. There are 2 kiosks serving snacks and drinks (including alcohol) and a cafe serving very nice tapas. It is easy to spend hours in the castle, relaxing in the shade and enjoying the breeze.

I was persuaded against my better judgement to visit the castle on foot on a red hot summers day, walking all the way up from the middle of town, I was just about ready to pass out in the heat when i got to the top.
A word of advice: don't contemplate walking up here if you are not fit, take a bottle of water and take it steady (I believe there are bus tours), ideally avoiding the hottest parts of the day. There is a cafeteria at the top which was a godsend as I was able to get an icecream and sit in the shade to cool down although a bucket of icy water to dunk my head into would have been better.
The history of the castle is fascinating and the all round views are great but make you realise how built up Alicante is.
Worth a trip out to get away from the packed beaches.

you can sit, enjoy the breez (yes in june) and watch the amazing views from high above. You can also see three small museums while there, the torture one was gruesome, but a must see.
