We got the lift up but walked down. The views from here are brilliant. On the way down we came upon a very nice tapas bar serving brilliant sangria!

From the top of the castle you have fantastic views. It is a long way up or you can take the lift to go up and walk on the way down.

The Castillo de Santa Bárbara is the symbol of Alicante and can be seen fom all roads leading into Alicante. I hjave live a 100 km away from Alicante since 26 years but have never bothered to visit the castle as it looks pretty boring
from outside. What a surprise when I went to visit this wonderful castle! The Castillo de Santa Bárbara is 166 meters high and offers tourists a great view over the city. You reach the castle either by elevator located inside the mountain Benacantil. This elevator is reached by a 200-meter long tunnel from Avenida de Jovellanos. The road is across from the beach. Also you may walk up or drive up and park the car below the castle and then walk up the last bid.
It's one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe and kept in very good condition.
From all around the walls you get the most fantastic views of Alicante. A heaven for photographers like myself. A splendid idea is to take the elevator to the top and after having walked around the vast area you walk down via the old part of Alicante, called "Barrio de Santa Cruz" A most rewarding walk that rounds up a fantastic visit to Alicante. Insider Tip:
Curiously, when viewed from El Postiguet beach, Mount Benacantil looks like a human face in profile which is known as "La Cara del Moro" or "The Moor's Face" and is one of the city's most emblematic images.

The elevator is opposite the Postiguet Beach, we paid 2,40E for the elevator and entrance to the castle. The weather was great the day we visited, and the views are spectacular. We spent about 30-45 min up there, before we walked down again. It is a nice walk, and we ended up in a cosy neighborhood in the hill under the castle close to the casita santa lucia.
