“Service is NOT 5 star”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2013

I am currently at the resort staying in the Tagor villas. The resort is attractive and the facilities aren't bad (although no gift shop for toiletries). The one thing that really lets this place down is service, or lack of it. For example you are supposed to get complimentary drinks by the pool at Tagor. You're lucky to get anything as you hardly ever see staff. You go to restaurants and bars and just sit and wait. The lock on our door didn't work and it was an hour before someone came to let us in. The staff may look busy but they achieve very little. Having stayed in RC resorts before, I am used to attentive staff. Here the onus is on the guest to make it happen. Not sure if this is cultural but it's a real disappointment. Your money is better spent elsewhere!

Bearing in mind it is a Ritz Carlton and extremely expensive this is a seriously disappointing hotel. Although it is very picturesque and the accommodation itself is absolutely fine, the restaurants and the overall service leave much to be desired. Permanent slow-moving queues at reception, mediocre food in the restaurants, very slow service everywhere, barmen that have no idea how to make a cocktail, a golf course that it is virtually impossible to get a tee time for, a sports bar that is closed when major sports are on, and wi-fi that is painfully slow and expensive. As I say seriously disappointing.

We arrived tired after an early morning flight , and were given a warm welcome at reception . After checking in , we were shown to our rooms . We had booked "Ocean View " but were offered " garden view " , which we declined . After complaining to reception staff , we were attended by the duty manager Rui Beiro who explained that the hotel was completely full ( half term !) and that they simply could not fulfill their obligations . Rui was very professional and understanding and arranged for us to change rooms the next day , although ocean view still not available . Compensation by way of a free dining experience was offered and accepted .
Hotel is large , and all rooms luxurious and comfortable . Dining good but on the expensive side with the seafood restaraunt by the beach easily the best . Breakfasts top class with the staff happy to serve before opening time when we had early starts for golf . Every single member of staff bar none were friendly , and could not do enough to please . Clearly they are all very happy working for Ritx Carlton ! I would single out Georgina , a lovely english lass now resident spanish who primarily looked after reception at the main pool restaraunt for breakfast and lunch but doubled up in the afternoon assisting with general dining experiences . Extremely friendly and efficient . The Spa was excellent and the golf course fantastic ; expensive if you were not resident on a package but in excellent condition and the views were amazing . The beach was very nice , swimming made pleasureable by the artificial reef but the beach restaraunt was expensive and food ordinary . The beach loungers could be more comfortable . This however was not the case with the adults only pool by the seafood restaraunt : they were superb , as were the staff who were very attentive . Fantastic hotel , a credit to Ritz Carlton . Great for parties and kids and , maybe the evening entertainment could be improved ? Lovely little harbour town 1 mile away if you have a car where you can eat like royalty without spending a fortune . The bell boys will tell you where to eat : Marsala is the pick.
Overall , a great hotel & golf trip . Thank you Rui for your patience and understanding .

Room Tip: Rooms are much the same quality

Stayed for 12 days for an intensive course but managed to squeeze in some leisure time.

The pond and huge koi carp is an attraction (daily feeding is a must see).

The rooms are very comfortable; fabulous big bath for relaxation. However there are no tea & coffee making facilities to enjoy whilst you are on the balcony in the late evening. Room service for beverages can be slow/tepid.

The food in each of the restaurants on location is excellent.

Choice of pools and private beach is exemplary. Golf course looked stunning too! Do remember to leave the resort though, Tenerife has a lot to offer!

One of the best hotels in the Canary Islands. Excellent Food, great golf course, magnified client service, a beautiful small beach with a curious transportations system. Great service and luxury rooms made for us a perfect stay. Highly recommend .

Room Tip: The rooms are better located than the villas

Having visited the Gran Melia hotel on the Island the year before and being told this hotel was much better we visited Abama with high hopes, from the start the signs we're not good. After arriving at the resort it appeared to be a competition on who could ignore us for the longest, in fact we had to go and seek assistance with our bags, no one came to us! We then waited almost an hour to actually check into the hotel which was a very poor start, having got to our rooms which are of a good standard we decided to book a table for the evenings meal, after 30 minutes of trying we we're advised that all the onsite restaurants we're full, not happy we had to enlist the help of the general manager to assist which to his credit he did! This set the tone for the week, the service is sloppy and inattentive and certainly not 5 star! The setting is great, the rooms are great as is the food when you manage to get seated, overall the experience felt more 4 star than 5, good basis but with much more work needed and especially given this is a Ritz Carlton Hotel with a five start price tag!

My friend and I travelled to the Abama on the 26th October 2013 for half term week and were amazed by the entire experience provided by this first rate hotel. On arrival, we were greeted by staff who whisked our cases away and discreetly checked the name tags so that, from then on, they could refer to us by name. At the front desk we were given a glass of champagne whilst check-on took place quickly and without fuss. We had booked a deluxe room but were informed that we had been upgraded to a villa which enabled us to use the private pool allocated to that group of villas. Unfortunately our room was not ready but we were directed to the terrace for lunch where we sat peacefully in the sunshine, ate a beautifully prepared lunch and had a couple of drinks while we waited. When the room was available we were efficiently escorted to the front of the hotel where a buggy (with our cases already stored on it) awaited to take us to our villa.

The villa room itself was perfect for us. There were two steps down to the pool area where sturdy sunloungers with thick mattresses awaited. Attendants around the pool ensured that the loungers were prepared with three towels and one attendant in particular (Isael) ensured that we were constantly supplied with bottles of water, lunch and anything else that we needed.

The restaurants were excellent. We were half board and most of the restaurants had a good selection of food included with some having small (in our opinion) supplements for the more expensive options e.g. 15 euros for a fantastic fillet steak. Our favourite restaurants were El Mirador which is a fish restaurant overlooking the sea and the Michelin starred MB restaurant for which we were given a 30 euro allowance for but was well worth the extra money.

The only fault we could find - and this really was a tiny fault - was that there didn't appear to be any adults only pools or restaurants. One of the pools was labelled as adults only but when we ventured away from our pool we found that there were lots of children there. Similarly, the breakfast in Los Chozos was supposed to be adults only but we found that this wasn't enforced. This really wasn't a huge problem for us but I can understand why it could be for some.

The staff were incredibly attentive and couldn't do enough to please and we were amazed that halfway through our holiday, when we approached reception with a query, the young girl who had checked us in still remembered my friend's name. We had a late flight home and when we asked to keep the room they offered us late checkout until 1.00pm free of charge or until 4.00pm for an additional charge of 35 euros each. We opted for the latter and, as such were able to sit by the pool for most of the day before heading straight to the airport.

This entire holiday from start to finish was incredibly relaxing and stress free - just what we wanted. Yes the drinks in the bar can be a little bit pricey but this is not the kind of hotel you would go to if you want to drink all night - it's perfect if you like good service, beautiful surroundings, high quality food and a quiet and restful atmosphere. We would definitely go back.

Room Tip: If you can, upgrade to a villa room. The pool areas are much quieter and the sunloungers are much b...
