This little church is placed on an island in the Atlantic ocean. I don't have enough words to describe its beauty, but I can say with no doubt it has been one of the most wonderful places I've ever visited. If you're a fan of rocks emerging from the ocean, like I am, that's the place to go!
There is a long way from the parking, so I strongly recommend good shoes, and once you're up, don't forget to ring the curch bell 3 times, to get a wish and shoo away bad spirits.

Put your walking shoes on and enjoy the walk (don't forget to ring the bell at the top). Note that the descent from the car parking to the road leading to San Juan is partially without steps. However, there is another road leading to the site but the car park here is not so large and it is quite a walk).

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, is an iconic landmark in the beautiful basque coast. The 10th century hermitage on top of the tiny peninsula is connected to the mainland by a bridge on the own rock. You have more than 200 steps up the top of the cliffs and the hermitage. The views from the cliffs are absolutely breathtaking, the Biscay bay's breeze, the blue sea, the wages breaking against the rocks... this tiny islet is enchanted. Unfortunately the landmark lacks of infrastructure and it is difficult to access and park nearby. This cant deter you of a worthy visit to the lovely place, just enjoy the walk.

The views of the monastary, nearby island and the coast/hills are exhilarating. Blue waters, green hills, and the carpet of flowers during summers at the top near the 1000 year old monastary only add to the beauty.

Definitely come here if you have half a day to spend near Bilbao.

I reached here by public bus (Bizkaibus A3517 from Bilbao which also stops at a village near the Holiday Inn Express ), which took around 1hr 45 minutes. The bus stops for 15 minutes at the beach in Bakio and then drops you right at the car park for Gaztelugatxe, where there's a restaurant too. Then there is a 20 minute mostly downhill trek to the beginning of the stairs. The stairs are again not to steep, around 10-15 minutes till the top, but more since you definitely will keep stopping to take pictures on the way. The trek back up to the main road can be difficult in the hot summer sun, but lot's of people beyond their 60s were doing the walk too, so won't be an issue for most.

Fantastic walk with amazing views, worth doing, but hard. Best time in the morning when it's not too hot
