“We got the last room....”
Reviewed October 11, 2012

We stopped here late one evening, after deciding we did not want to stay in Augsburg. It was during Oktoberfest, there were few hotels along the route. In fact, this hotel only had one room left, and it was in a separate building, on the second floor of a meeting room. Sink and toilet were on the first floor, and the shower / sleeping area (four beds) were on the second floor, up a spiral staircase. Not the best set-up, but we were tired and the staff was very accommodating and offered a very nice rate, including breakfast. There was a tent set up outside for the smoking Oktoberfestians, but it was surprisingly quiet.

The hotel is in the middle of the town. There seemed to be one rowdy spot where the younger folks were hanging out, but the town was pretty quiet otherwise. The police station is right next door to the hotel, so we felt safe!

We had dinner in the restaurant (very good) while waiting for them to decide if they had a room available. Breakfast the next morning was also very good.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main hotel building looked like they would be fine.

This beautiful hotel is situated in the middle of a picturesque village of Aichach. The hotel has a very friendly atmosphere and although they had stopped serving food at the time of our arrival (9pm) they were very accommodating and made us some anyway, which was fresh and very tasty. The room we stayed in (29) was roomy, clean and comfortable. The only thing I find in all European hotels is the lack of tea and coffee making facilities, however there is always bottled water and fruit juice in the mini bars which vary in price. Although the hotel closes as the last customer leaves, you are given a key to come and go as you please.
We found this hotel of excellent value and service and would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: The village is very quiet and so I wouldnt think any rooms would be quieter than others.

I have stayed at the Hotel Gasthof Specht twice in connection with business in Munich during the busy Oktoberfest time when hotels rooms are either non-existent or expensive. I have a colleague who lives in Aichach and who has made arrangements for me at this family-run establishment.

First a word on location. Aichach is a storybook-like farming community northwest of Munich about 45 minutes between Augsberg and Dachau. The trip from the central business district will take you out to the Autobahn A8. You will see the exit for Aichach. A few miles from the autobahn, you will come to the town which is surrounded by an ancient city wall with two imposing gates (Tors). It is a picturesque and placid place.

Hotel and Gasthof Specht sits adjacent to one of the town gates. On the lower floor is a restaurant and bar with seating outside. Its location is prime for watching all the activities on the main street of the town. There is plenty of parking around the hotel. Check in will provide you a friendly welcome and a key with a heavy weight that will remind you to turn it in before you leave on your day of business or exploration.

The rooms are simple but exceedingly clean and comfortable. I was in room 103 which is on the 2nd floor (the ground floor called E is not called the first floor). The room is perched over the sidewalk dining of the Spect Restaurant below. The bed consisted of 2 single beds brought together to form a larger sleeping surface, typical for Germany. A private bathroom in the room is modern and there is plenty of hot water at good pressure. The blanket on the bed was typically German - a thick down comforter covered in a cotton duvet. There is high speed internet in the rooms.

The room included a German breakfast which for me is a highlight. An assortment of fresh bread, cold cuts and cheese, various kinds of cereal, jams and soft boiled eggs. I'm told you can order some Muenchener Weisswurst - a tradition for the area. The only down side is the coffee which is typically German - dark and bitter. But they do have an espresso machine and will make you a great cappuccino.

Because the hotel is in the town center, you are a short walk from all kinds of great restaurants. But save one night for a meal with Specht. Their typical Bavarian restaurant has a great menu of regional specialties cooked to perfection. And you can't leave without a taste of their draft beers. My favorite is Helles (Bright) but they also have a great Hefeweizen. On the other days you can sample from a variety of nice restaurants in this pretty little Bavarian town.

For those that are outdoor activity minded, there are tons of riding trails surrounding the town and adjacent towns. Whether you are on foot or on 2 wheels, the hotel can recommend the right route for your day of exploration.

Bottom Line: If you are in Munich during the busy Festzeit, check out Hotel Gasthof Specht for a cost effective alternative to Munich.

Room Tip: Get a room that looks out to the main street. Its fun to watch the town come alive in the early morn...
