Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Over 300 years of tradition, yet still highly topical: Hardly any other product is as aesthetic as porcelain. It reveals a lot about peoples’ lives in different times – how they decorated their tables and what types of food they ate. Porzellanikon – Staatliches Museum fur Porzellan puts the spotlight on all of these fascinating aspects of porcelain with great expertise and passion at its two locations. Porcelain is all around us: We drink our coffee and tea from mugs and cups, eat our meals and snacks from large and small, round and square plates. But we rarely ever think about how these aesthetic and useful dishes and cups are made. Just how much work it takes to produce porcelain – from the raw materials to the finished decorated piece – is something you can see and experience for yourself at the second location of Europe’s largest museum dedicated to porcelain: Porzellanikon in Selb. You can get your hands dirty at this museum and work directly with the material in programmes designed for Children and Young Adults, Families and Senior Citizens. But you also learn about the Social Conditions that prevailed in the porcelain producing towns and cities across Europe. Interactive stations subtly provide details while videos let the people speak in their own words.
Useful Information: Food available for purchase, Activities for young children, Stairs / elevator, Activities for older children, Wheelchair access, Lockers / storage

“Best kept secret”

I also feel I need to write about Selb. It is a small village along Germany’s Porcelain Road that has factory outlets from many of Germany’s best porcelain manufacturers like Hutschenreuther, Rosenthal and Villeroy and Bosch. They are housed in two large, multi-level old manufacturing buildings. It’s worth the stop in Selb….stay at Hotel LOUiS and shop for porcelain.
