La Sombra Hostel
Reviewed January 17, 2014

We stayed here for a month cause we enjoyed it so much. We actually looked around the entire town for good accomadation as we were going to stay so long, and wanted the best we could find. This place was it. Only 3 buildings from the beach, down a side street so it was quiet than all the places on the rd. Still only a few hundred mts into the main part of town. Rooms are big with a deck if you get the top floor. Only negative was that they never offered to clean the room- so i did it frequently, had to ask for new sheets and towels and toilet bin to get cleaned everynow and then. Kitchen was good, got pretty messy from guests though who didnt clean up. Free water and coffee each morning which is a bonus. This place was one of the few with a pool which is a real bonus.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top right are best

I ended up coming to El Tunco by myself after my friend had to cancel and wanted to stay at a social hostel where I could meet people. La Sombra turned out to be the perfect spot even though I got a private room. I went for the most remodeled room with A/C. Most rooms come with hammocks outside which is a plus. This particular room is also at the end of the hallway and away from the pool, so it's pretty quiet. I also had a table with chairs which was convenient for writing, reading and hanging out in the evenings. Be aware that the place is still basic with cold saltwater showers, but it's so hot that you don't really need anything else.

This is one of the most social places to stay in El Tunco if you're looking to meet other travelers. The setup of the rooms around the pool and kitchen area makes for easy interaction with others. There is also water available to refill your bottles and an outdoor shower by the pool. The owner, Jose, is always available and very friendly. I arranged airport pickup ($35) since I was arriving in the evening and it went without a hitch.

Overall, I would recommend La Sombra if you're looking for a basic and comfortable, and social place to stay.

Room Tip: Get a room with A/C in hot weather. Private rooms in the second building away from the pool are quie...

We came with the intention of staying only 3 days, but stayed for 9 because it was so great. Chilled and sociable hostel, decent sized common area, swimming pool, surf boards to rent, hammocks, sunbeds, and a kitchen. the kitchen can get crowded for the amount of people that want to cook. Its right next to the beach, and the staff are really friendly and helpful. And there is free coffee.

We stayed 3 nights at La Sombra and were very happy. The room was basic but a decent size with bathroom, strong fan and hammock and seats outside. The hostel has a kitchen and small pool (with shower) , which is great considering the heat. The place feels very secure being on a street with what seemed like 24hr security.

Atmosphere is very relaxed and the beach and village are < 100yds away. There is a good, chilled, friendly vibe here, but it's not a loud, party atmosphere.

A great combination of value and facilities and a welcome few days of relaxation from 12hr bus journeys for us.

We stayed in a private room with bathroom. Close to the beach and restaurants. Clean small pool. Lots of hammocks. Lots of other friendly travellers. Free coffee in the morning. Average kitchen. We would stay there again!

We stayed 4 nights at La Sombra. It's a very basic place. If you're a surfer, it's all you need. Easy barefoot walk on the beach access gets you to "La Bocana" surf break. It's a 10 minute walk to paddle out at El Sunzal. There's a laundry business nearby, although a bit expensive. The pool is super clean. There's an outdoor shower to use after you get back from surfing. Wifi signal is good in the common area, and a little weaker in the rooms (upstairs). There's a very basic outdoor kitchen and refrigerator you can use, but it REALLY needs new cookware. Don't count on good pots and pans. Free coffee and water refills. I recommend labeling your food and beer to avoid any confusion.
It was a mostly a younger crowd during our stay. So if that's where you fit, then you'll enjoy meeting a bunch of people. If you're sensitive to cigarette smoke, you may consider a room further away from the outdoor common area. Of course it all depends on who's staying... Some are more polite than others. We stayed in a double with a private bath and a floor fan for $20 a night. Seems to be one of the cheapest in El Tunco. Heard the dorm is around $7 a night. Easy to get cold beer nearby.
Hints: 2 ATMs in El Tunco, don't accept MasterCard, but I think Visa is okay. Good grocery store and more ATMs are in La Libertad at "El Faro" mall. Talk to locals about the busses.... We found out the San Salvador busses aren't always running. We got lucky catching the only one of the day on a Wednesday.
Basically, you're here to surf, eat, drink beer, sleep... Repeat.
