“Amazing place... not so amazing rooms”
Reviewed October 31, 2011

This Hotel has everything!! Great staff, amazing pool, breath taking views & delicious FREE breakfast!!! The location is perfect!! Near food, bars & on the beach. What it lacks is in it's rooms. The rooms have carpet that smells like mildew. It made sleeping a bit difficult. Most beachside hotels have tile floors. Unfortunately they went with carpet and it stinks. Also, El Salvador had just had a heavy storm and may have also contributed to the smell. It wasn't just our room. The shower was a bit uncomfortable and may not have been very sanitary. It is a small concrete slab with ocean rocks.

The view from the room balcony & the hammocks on the beach were amazing. We always felt very secure. They have 24 Hr security. Truly a great place. I just hope they get rid of the stinky carpet soon!!

Room Tip: Beach front rooms are your best choice!

After debating if a trip to El Salvador would be a safe thing to do we decided to give it a shot. This hotel was referred to by a friend and man she was right. It sits beautifully located, right on the beach, was fantastic views. The hotel itself has 6 or 7 rooms, some of them are newly remodeled and the other will be soon.
We stayed in one of the new rooms. It had two nice beds, I would say queen size probably, a satellite tv, and a seating area. The bathroom was very nice, with a big tub. We had a little balcony as well. Oh, and an AC, which was working great. The room was very nicely decorated, and clean.
The hotel pool was very nice and clean as well. It overlooks the ocean and is the nicest pool we have seen around there. The also have a bar and restaurant, and the food was delicious.
You can walk to other bars and restaurants just down the road, all within 5 minutes of walking. for surfing it's amazing, great waves and almost no one in the water. Or if you want to just watch the action, just chill in one of the hammocks they got there, and have one beer after the other.

Bottom line: If you are looking for a 5 star vacation, with W hotel quality rooms then go to elsewhere, but if you are looking for something different, interesting, fun, and adventurous, then go to El Salvador and stay at the Tekuani Kal.

Room Tip: Ask for the "suites".

My wife and I spent 5 days here to simply get away from it all, and enjoyed the spectacular setting, the service and the friendliness of the staff, the food and lounging on the beach or at the pool. During the week, we were the only guests and had the run of the place.

The drawbacks mentioned by other reviewers are all true, but I would consider them minor in comparison to the overall experience. Even though the meals might be a tad more expensive than elsewhere in Tunco, the view and service do make up for it.

The wifi was no longer working, when we were there, which only helped in putting a bit of distance between us and the "real world".

You should go ... the bus ride from San Salvador takes only about an hour and costs 1 US$ or a bit more, if you have to change buses in La Libertad.

This hotel is a small gem. The basic structure is quite simple, seven rooms either with a small porch facing the ocean or a small garden. The landscape architecture is exceptionally artistic and well thought out. On the beach in front of the hotel, there's a small oasis with hammocks. So you spend your day either on the beach, or swinging in a hammock, or on your private deck, or next to the small pool. Clearly a rough life.
The staff is very friendly although no one really spoke English. The hotel itself is spotlessly clean. Their restaurant is the best in the immediate area (I had no car and never bothered to do any exploring). I highly recommend this hotel for a very relaxing few days or week.

My husband and I spent our 23rd wedding anniversary at Tekuani Kal in El Tunco. We enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and the top notch customer service received during our entire stay! It was very easy to find the hotel even at night!
The staff went out of their way to ensure our stay was as memorable as possible. From the candles set out in a heart shape to the towels in the shape of two kissing swans with flowers! Nice touch!
The views everywhere in Tekuani Kal are beautiful!! We partook in the Indian ceremony Saturday evening and found it very interesting as well as massages which were very relaxing! It was a big surprise to see the extensive menu as well! Everything we tried was excellent!
The only suggestions we have would be to reopen the bar, add wash clothes to the bathroom and provide the purchase of cold soft drinks & water after restaurant hours.
If you are looking for a laid back, affordable get away.......look no further! Tekuani Kal is my favorite secret get away! Can't wait to go back!!

Good Points
Friendly staff and good service, small infinity pool with great views out to sea, all rooms have sea view and small terrace,Free WiFI, only a few minutes walk up to the bars and restaurants of El Tunco, relaxed atmosphere.
Bad Points
Carpet in Rooms, No hot water and a strange arrangement of an overhead tap for the shower, no comfortable lounging chairs in rooms, by the pool or in the restaurant. No fridge in the rooms, Menu prices significantly more expensive than similar offerings along the beach.

Maybe I have been spoiled by living in SE Asia for too long? - I liked the hotel and the staff are its biggest asset as they are all charming and helpful. But I thought it was too expensive for what they were offering US$85+ is not cheap in my books and for that I at least expect hot water and a decent shower in a bathroom. If nothing else get rid of the brown carpet in the rooms and replace with tiles or painted concrete - it really was unpleasant to have carpet in a room in a beach front hotel - you just no it cant be properly cleaned..

This is my first experience of hotels in El Salvador so maybe after samplping a few more over the coming weeks I may come to realise that infact this hotel is good value in the local context, but at the moment i think it is a great location, relaxing atmosphere but a little expensive for what you get.
