If your idea of a great Italian holiday is a day of walking in breathtaking scenery, exploring lovely medieval villages, food and wine that is some of the best to be found anywhere in Italy, and then to be able to return 'home' to a glass of wine by a stunning pool, and the opportunity to while away a pleasant hour in conversation with the perfect host, then really Prato di Sotto would be your ideal.
Penny Radford has spent over twenty years restoring this beautiful farmhouse and its cottages from a near ruinous state; it truly has been a labour of love and it shows in every detail of the exquisite, impeccably designed houses. From the crisp white linen to the perfectly equipped kitchen, the infinitely soft shabby-chic sofas to the herbs and vegetables ready for picking in the garden; and then there are the dogs for walking! One would be hard pushed to find anything missing in this holiday accommodation. But all this is only a small element of the Prato di Sotto magic that centres on Penny herself; Penny makes you feel like old friends invited to a 'house party'; she creates an atmosphere of welcome and warmth, where nothing is too much trouble, and where expert local knowledge is 'on tap'; and yet this is all accomplished in a deceptively effortless and casual way.
We have had many trips to many parts of Italy over the years, but this, our first stay in Umbria was a joy because we stayed as Penny's guests - we would love others to be able to share that enormous pleasure!
The Location is idyllic nestled in the Hills of Umbria - Ideal for couples or families (with Pets) who want to get away to a relaxing mountain retreat. There are a number of different self contained properties to let which allow both privacy and the opportunity to meet others if you wish to at the complex's swimming pool. Ideally located for both activities like walking or cycling, or just driving to local villages and enjoying Italian rural life, or one of the many festivals. Easy to drive to many of the more popular Umbria tourist attractions, with local train connections just a short drive away. The proprietor and staff are always contactable, if you need any help with those little holiday issues or advice on local attractions, and of course speak fluent Italian and English. Amazing panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, often above the clouds which nestle in the valleys, very peaceful. I was amazed to hear nightingales singing in the evening, (which is one of the few remaining locations where they still exist!). The local village has a lovely mix of shops cafés/bars and restaurants if you need a break from the peacefulness of the complex. Its a great place to base yourself and get a real feel for true Italian country life. Highly recommended, you wont be disappointed.
