“Great location ”

Spent a week at villa bastiola with our 17 month old daughter in September. Great location to visit the beautiful surrounding Umbrian countryside. Amongst the favourite places we visited were Gubbio and Montone. The villa is well stocked with children's toys and books. We would say that the downstairs apartment is more rustic with features including the original fire surround. The top apartment does appear to be more modern and open which we felt might be more preferable for those with young families. We also found it quite noisy in the ground floor apartment, being able to hear people walking round/ babies crying upstairs although I notice this hasn't been noted in previous comments. There is a great pizza restaurant a short walk down the hill although they don't have a high chair and a lovely baby friendly restaurant a short drive away called il vecchio granaio.

“Wonderfully relaxing, beautiful location”
Reviewed October 9, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

The villa is a beautifully restored two-apartment building with ample grounds , outdoor seating areas and a swimming pool. Villa Bastille is located on the hillside overlooking the small village of Calzolaro. You need a car for this place, but it is really worth it. Possibly the most relaxing vacation we have ever had because we could be self-contained at the villa, or choose to visit countless beautiful places.

Although 'in the middle of nowhere' is an appropriate description, being in the middle means everywhere is within driving distance. The villa is marked on Google Maps, so take a look. We managed Pisa, Firenze, Sien, Lake Trasimeno, Perugia and Assisi. We could have managed Ancona and the east coast but tried some of the smaller, closer towns and restaurants instead.

The summer months are when the various festivals happen. Do some research in advance if you want to see any. There is a lot of information at the villa itself provided by the owners, but there are also smaller less publicised events happening. We were lucky enough to see an amazing free open air piano concert in the square at Monterchi, a stunning village on top of a hill across the valley. One restaurant, one piano (and Marco Marconi) and a whole lot of people listening to a jazz mashup-up of Staying Alive by the Bee Gees and a genius arrangement of the music from Star Wars.

The villa has wifi, which satisfied our 14year old daughter, but even she agreed there is so much more to a holiday in Villa Bastiola.

“Just beautiful :)”
Reviewed September 13, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We stayed in Apartment Ulivo mid Aug 2016 with 2 young children. The stone villa is beautiful and views amazing, that's all you need to know really!

The owner had been very helpful from the start, booking was easy, queries answered quickly.

The villa is up a hillside with other houses and villas around, but out of the village. The road was v quiet, occasionally you can hear people in other gardens/pools but the views from the garden over to the hills make you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere!

You can tell that there has been attention to detail and thought gone into making the villa a home from home, far more than you get in some self catering premises. From the well stocked kitchen - equipment, spices, tea, coffee etc, a decent complimentary welcome pack, a few dishwasher tablets and some washing powder available; to tips on how to keep the villa cool - which shutters and windows to open to let the lovely mountain breeze through; a well stocked bookshelf, and also a few maps and local guides, & a selection of videos; to having a fridge next to the pool! Beds were v comfortable, bathrooms high standard. Bedrooms weren't huge but you don't spend your holidays in there, wasn't a problem for us. The massive original fireplace in the lounge is quite a feature!

The grounds are big enough to allow 2 families to enjoy them at the same time without being on top of each other (I hope the other family felt the same!). The kids loved the views from the swings - 'the best swings in the world'! We enjoyed eating outside a few times and lapping in the views til it got dark. There are plenty of different seating areas. Having your 'own' pool is such a luxury! We needn't have brought pool toys at all as there was a basket full! The pool salt water purification system did indeed seem kind on your skin. There are lots of outdoor toys for families with young kids, though I think we spent the whole time in the pool or on the swings, or relaxing in the garden.

The restaurant just down the road is popular, must be a good sign. We enjoyed a couple of meals there. We enjoyed local half day trips to medieval villages like Montone, Gubbio and a longer day out to Lake Trasimeno. We also went to Florence via the train from Arezzo, perfectly do-able but quite a long day out for younger children. It was hot in mid August but not unbearable and actually the mountain breeze made a big difference. We noticed how much hotter it got when we moved nearer the coast for our second week away.

Don't often go the same place twice but could definitely be tempted! A beautiful, peaceful and relaxing holiday location with added extras for young children = happy family!

“Most picturesque pool ever”
Reviewed July 15, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

We had a fantastic 5 night stay with our one year old in Apartment Ulivo. The apartment is really well kitted out for little ones, with lots of toys and books for them to play with and a swing in the garden. The kitchen is one of the best equipped we've seen in a self-catering apartment which made eating in super easy and the BBQ in the garden meant we could have some lovely al fresco lunches whilst the baby slept. The views from the garden are simply stunning and the lovely pool really is the icing on the cake. Would highly recommend a stay in this beautiful part of Italy.

“Relax in Umbria”
Reviewed September 7, 2014 for a stay in August 2014

Villa Bastiola was a perfect base for our week in Umbria. It's in a very quiet area but with the added bonus of a great pizza/past restaurant just 2 minutes walk away. It was great to have the welcome pack of wine pasta etc upon arrival too. From the Villa we were able to drive to lovely hilltop villages such as Montone and Gubbio for lunch, as well as drive to the Lake about 45 mind away (or 2 hours if you just follow my iphone sat nav directions!). There is a small beach there where our 4 year old daughter was able to play and muck about in the water. Another onus is the short transfer time from Perugia airport, about 35-40 mins.
Oh it was also lovely to pick the ripe figs in the garden and have them for breakfast! I would recommend Villa bastiola!!
