“Delicious, honest Umbrian cuisine, served with style”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

This rural agroturismo near Umbertide in Umbria (near the Tuscan border) is everything that a restaurant should be. Delicious honest food, served by delightful staff, led by Ely (who is married to Albi, the chef). If you are anywhere near Umbertide or Cortona, this restaurant is worth a detour. *****

“Best food of our trip to Umbria - and that is saying something!”
Reviewed May 5, 2013

We stumbled across Calagrana because our first choice restaurant was closed as it was the beginning of the season. Thank goodness we did! They were very accommodating, putting together a table for all eight of us (without a reservation) and helping us with suggestions for the kids (one of whom has to stick to a very limited menu). The house wine was terrific (we didn't need to peruse the extensive wine list any further) and the cheese bread is delicious. Between us we tried nearly everything ,from the small but perfectly formed menu - whatever you do, don't miss the meat ravioli with truffle sauce - I was the envy of the table. The owners were lovely - as mutual dog lovers I'm afraid we hindered their attempts at getting the puppy back into the house (and probably would have stolen him given half a chance) - and their young son was also adorable! We managed to squeeze in some equally delicious dessert and all left having had the perfect 'final meal' to our trip. The views are spectacular. Highly recommended!

“Super Sunday lunch”
Reviewed May 5, 2013

We don't normally write trip advisor reviews but felt compelled to write following the previous review. We have not experienced any of the negative points mentioned previously. Calagrana is one of our favourite restaurants. We eat out regularly both in the UK and Italy. We enjoy good food and this is certainly something we always experience at Calagrana. The chef Alberto has worked in many prestigious restaurants in London and Paris and if you enjoy good food this restaurant is well worth the visit.
We have always been made very welcome and choice of wines both red and white although not extensive are excellent. We look forward to returning.

“Wish we would have missed....”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

We went to this restaurant because it was recommended by the owner of our villa. I called to make reservations on a Wednesday and the owner said they could not accomodate the 7 of us...3 adults and 4 older children aged 11-13. She said we did not want to miss her restaurant because they were the best...so we made reservations for Friday, our last night in Umbria.
The setting is lovely... It is difficult to find. We had to call on the way to get directions. The restaurant is actually very small and quaint. We sat down and I tried to order a glass of white wine as an apertif, but she only had a slightly sparkling one that she did not recommend. We ordered a bottle of white wine she recommended and it was OK, but my husband usually drinks red wine so he was being kind:)
They have a small menu and accommodations for kids are not done. So our kids all ordered pasta on the menu. 2 liked their dishes and 2 did not... Our appetizer of risotta was very good and the asparagus was also quite good. Chicken pate was OK. My friend and I had chicken with mushrooms and it was good, but my husbands pork was over done. Deserts were average.
My biggest issue was with the owner and how unfriendly and uninterested she was in us...
The whole dining experience is very important and we did not feel welcome. My son asked her about the animals she had on the property. He asked if there were any dogs. She said she had 2 but did not know where they were. Later on another couple came into the restaurant and she pulled a puppy out behind the bar and they (the couple) held the dog. Of course, my children were interested and asked to see him, she said he had to go back in the kitchen and sent him away. Seriously?! She rarely came over to us to check on us or ask us where we were from, or to offer more bread or drinks... I think we were 1 of 4 tables in the restaurant. SHe was the only one waiting on tables. Her "lanky yanky" as she called him was back in the kitchen. I would say she was almost rude to us. It was just a really disappointing last dinner in Umbria....so as I said, wish we would have missed. We had so many wonderful experience with the Italian people at wineries and restaurants...so I should mention that the owner is British....

“A Dining Experience”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

Relocated to Umbria several years ago and live on the Trasimeno side of Umbertide. While discovering Umbria we have tried many of the rated restaurants during these years. We recently re-discovered "Dining at Calagrana" (lunch and evenings) with friends from various parts of the world. Not an extensive menu and not typical Umbrian BUT specials change frequently and always professionally prepared, presented and served by the all round Professional Team - Chef Albi, ably assisted by Christopher while Ely diligently and enthusiastically manages front of house. The quality Wine List is reasonably priced for this standard of restaurant. Recently mounted paintings by local artist John Littlewood bring a lovely and added ambiance to your "Dining Experience". In our experience and that of our guests this restaurant deserves a higher rating - a hidden gem set in the gentle rolling hills to West of Umbertide. We look forward to our return visits........................
