Yes, it's not Hilton in UAE. But when you go to Africa and want to feel it, this is really good place to stay. Staff is great, location is great. Hotel is not a five star, but like title tells, this is absolutely great place. Service, facilities and staff is great in the hotel which still reminds you that you are in Africa, not in NYC, London or Emirates 5 star hotels. Great value for money.

P.S. This is wierd , because normally I find something to wrong, ok, it rain in couple of nights, so please order sunshine before you go

Room Tip: Pay little extra and get superior room

I've now stayed at four or five of the resort hotels along Bamburi beach over a period of about 15 months, and this visit to Kenya Bay stands head and shoulders above the rest.

For me the location is just perfect, I always spend some time at Il Covo restaurant and disco which is right next door (see my separate review), and there's a selection of other decent restaurants within easy walking distance along the beach. I was greeted at reception by Stella who proved to be somewhat of a gem ... she's cheerful, is knowledgable and informative upon arrival, and has a good sense of humor. I asked for a late check out as I had a late flight, and Stella organized it instantly at no extra charge. What a champion! And the rest of the staff I encountered during my stay were similarly friendly and helpful. Well done to all.

But the thing that really made this stay exceptional was the quality of the room. By and large reviews of this hotel have generally been complimentary, but often with a note that (like a lot of the other properties along the beach) the rooms were showing signs of wear and tear. The room I was given was, I believe, a Deluxe Seafront Room, which has just been fully renovated. (In fact, they're still in the process of renovating them, they've started at the beach front and are working their way back.) I was on the upper (of two) floors, with the high African style roof and ceiling. The rooms are large, comfortably if not lavishly furnished, the air conditioners are new and quiet, and there's a large new Sony flatscreen on the wall opposite the bed (could do with a better selection of channels though). Best of all, the sizable bathroom is brand spanking new, and everything works a treat (takes a while for the hot water to come through, just the distances involved I guess). Quite a large and reasonably private balcony just 30 metres from the sea, so a nice sea breeze and a soothing ocean soundtrack. Lots of power points too, for all those gadgets that we travel with these days. Free wi-fi at various locations around the property too, although not in the rooms; no big deal for me, I wasn't there to play with my computer. The only slight negatives I can think of about the room (and this is really nitpicking!): they've replaced everything but the fridge which looked a bit worn but worked just fine; a kettle in the rooms would be nice; and the door lock could be a bit more substantial given that the entrance to the room is at the rear and is quite hidden from view.

As for the rest of the property, it met all my expectations. Some people have commented on the redundant water features, who do indeed detract a little visually; however, there were people working on the gardens as well as the buildings, so perhaps these will be part of the overall makeover? My half-board meals were just fine, although I do tend to eat out most of the time when I'm down there. The staff in the restaurant were also pleasant and helpful. The Frangipani bar and restaurant right down next to the beachfront is an excellent spot to sit with a cold drink and watch the world go by on the beach while keeping you at arm's length from the touts and vendors. I noticed too that the activities organised by the hotel seemed to cater well to the family guests and were well attended. The pool is also showing its age, but everyone in it was having fun.

So the bottom line is that the Kenya Bay, for me, was outstanding. Even more so given that that half-board rate per night worked out at just US$75 at current exchange rates. Very hard to beat for both value and the very pleasant experience I had. I would certainly recommend this property to anyone with perhaps one caveat: see if you can book yourself into one of the newly renovated rooms.

And just a post script on those touts and vendors. I often read in these reviews negative comments about the "beach boys". It's all quite simple. You're in Africa. You are staying in a large, plush resort -- that makes you rich. They are selling trinkets on the beach -- that makes them poor. You will always be a target. They are not unpleasant, and can often be genuinely helpful. They will go away if you tell them to. If you don't like it, holiday somewhere else -- the Riviera, Florida, Queensland's Gold Coast. One way or another, as a tourist you will be ripped off, just in different ways ($7 for a coke in Cannes springs to mind). It's just part of holidaying at the beach in Africa.

Room Tip: Ask for a Seafront Deluxe room on the southern side of the property.

Stayed for two weeks at the Kenya Bay Beach Hotel in August this year, absolutely loved the hotel - the plus points of the hotel are as follows:
1. Great value for money
2. Very good and fresh food
3. Good staff
4. Nice new refurbished rooms - deluxe rooms also being currently refurbished and looking great. 4 star luxury for the price of three stars
5. Very central location on Bamburi beach - walking distance to Yul's restaurant and aquadrome and whitesands beach hotel and immediately adjacent to the very popular Il Covo restaurant
6. Free Internet!
7. We got a free upgrade to the superior rooms - the deluxe rooms are also lovely with large bathrooms and beautiful Tv's
8. The new spa is very charming and was great for massage - my wife loved the hair treatments
The negative part is that my wife and I must wait a whole year before we can get some time off work before we return back to Kenya Bay!

Our group was 36 staff and pupils from Limavady Grammar School, Northern Ireland. We found the staff very friendly and helpful, the food was excellent and the facilities were all we had hoped for. The students spent time in and around the pool, where the hotel staff organised games, and on the beach for volleyball. They also had easy access to book banana boating and jet-skiing nearby. Some of us even had a massage in the beauty parlour and the girls went for manicures, tatoos etc.
The location allowed for a short (30 minutes) drive into Mombasa for a tour of the old city, which everyone enjoyed.
All in all, a great way to round off our month in Kenya! Highly recommended.

It's way chapter than similar hotels. Room is well maintained and clean, bathroom could do with a refresh but it's fine. We stayed on the third floor, view across the whole area to the sea. The water feature was drained and an eyesore, but the pool was there, and it's very relaxing sitting on a lounger looking out over the beach.

In common with it seems all beach hotels, facilities are not on the beach itself - there are no actual beach bars or beach sun loungers anywhere. But that's fine, and it stops you being hassled by beach boys - although they're nowhere near as annoying as, say, Morocco.

In summary, it's a good value choice for an upscale hotel at a bargain price, with friendly staff and a great atmosphere.
