“The room is more like a prison cell.”
Reviewed July 23, 2013

Stayed here in 1998 and it was fantastic in The Pennine Room.
Returned in July 2013 during the heatwave and was put in The Treviot Room. It was more like a small prison cell and a "sweat" box. No air conditioning, no window to the outside, only a roof window to open. The food was average and not cheap.
This is the hotel at the start or finish of the Pennine Way so you need a good night's sleep which we didn't get due to the heat and clostrophobia feeling in the room. Very small bathroom and the shower water was luke warm and weak. The lady serving breakfast was lovely, but the rest of the staff were not "warm"
I do not recommend staying here unless you can get The Pennine Room and only for the convenience of doing The Pennine Way.

Room Tip: I only recommend you take The Pennine Room. Keep well away from The Treviot Room.

The Hotel is a well-decorated and modern surprise in the middle of the border country. It's clearly been recently redone (after some fire issues) and they're clearing aiming to hit gold on all levels. The rooms are lovely and some bathrooms even have a full-sized bathtub (a welcome pleasure after walking all day!), but can be exceptionally tiny. Some also have no windows which, on a hot day, makes them stuffy and uncomfortable. The walls are also VERY thin. I could my neighbors on both sides quite clearly the entire time.

Coffee/tea service and flat screen tvs seem to be the standard. I was told wifi wasn't an option in my room which wasn't the best of news.

The hotel's restaurant/pub serves great food but I recommend booking as it seems to be the hottest spot in town. The breakfast in the morning was more than decent: although their "famous" smoked salmon and scrambled eggs looked only half-hearted.

They'll prepare a lunch for you upon request if you're walking (for about 5 pounds), but make sure that you emphasize what you want on your sandwich very clearly. I orderer what I thought was a cheese and date chutney sandwich only to discover 4 hours later that all I received was a wedge of cheese between two slices of bread.

Overall, a very pleasant experience, but you definitely need to know these little foibles when booking!

Stayed here at the start of a hike down the Pennine Way. Friendly staff, good beer, comfortable well equipped rooms and a jug of fresh milk for my tea were nice touches. WiFi is challenging but the barman showed me where to sit to get reception. As it is a long hike to Byrness, I figured that I had to leave before 8 at Dawn, so thanks staff for the early 7am cornflakes. Yes I made it over the snow and mountains to Byrness but not before dusk. The Pennine Way along the Anglo-Scottish border is just fantastic in the sun and snow. The group of cyclists pedalling up Windy Gayle with me meant that I was not alone on the mountains either.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great! But for Wifi, use the other end of the Bar!

This hotel was a great place to end our walk on the Pennine Way. We had a large room with a huge bathroom, which was very welcome. The staff serving the evening meal had difficulty in remembering our order, but we did enjoy the food and beer when it arrived.

We frequently visit North Northumberland and since discovering the Border Hotel have visited on several occasions and it has never disappointed. It is full of character, not spoilt and offers great food both at lunchtime and evening. We had asked to be seated in the conservatory on booking, as it is often busy when we arrive. On this occasion we ended up being the only ones seated in the conservatory so asked to be moved back into the bar area where others were eating, which was done with no fuss. My husband is a real ale fan and again, he is catered for here with choices of excellent different real ales. It is definitely worth the 30 minute drive for us. A couple of small criticisms were last time we had a meal they somehow got the bill wrong and added an extra drink, so check before you pay! Plus the barmaids didn't know anything about the beers so couldn't recommend one, but did offer a taste first.

Stayed here the night of Friday 1st March 2013 before embarking on a stroll along the St Cuthbert's Way. .
Hotel ticked all the boxes. Staff were friendly and welcoming, room was clean, bed was comfy and evening meal and breakfast were excellent.
Packed lunch was provided, which while adequate was nothing special for the price. Staff were happy to fill my water bottles free of charge from the tap.
Bar seemed popular with the locals which i always take to be a good sign. Reasonable selection of beers though a few more real ales wouldn't go amiss.
Member of staff was happy to take my photo in front of the Scotland end to end sign on the Saturday morning!

The hotel is situated in a quiet village location.

The welcome here was tremendous, not just by the staff but by the locals too. All wanted to involve you in there conversations. Rooms were spacious with big bathrooms. The restaurant produces excellent food from a varied menu. Breakfast was spot on too. The young staff members were very friendly & helpful.
When I return to the area again, I would definately stay here again.
