“A magical place!”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

This is my favorite place in the world now. It it a beautiful inn and an even more beautiful setting. Edmundo, the manager of the inn, is so helpful, friendly and caring. It makes sure everybody has a great experience. The dinners were delicious and I enjoyed some of the best food of my trip here. I would recommend staying here to anybody looking or a peaceful time in a stunning environment.

We went here for 2 days in August with our 3 kids (6,8,10) who still remember the instructions over the compostable toilet, "sit back, poop and enjoy the scenery"!! (which included a llama walking by one day!) Ah.. the scenery! Heavenly, breathtaking (literally, at that altitude!). The owner was very helpful arranging horseback riding (HIGHLY recommend it! what amazing value and fun!) and a drive to Lago Quilotoa. unfortunately we didn't have time for more hiking but the other travelers recommended it (after having acclimatized). The food was tasty, local and home made, the common room warm and relaxing and the staff very helpful (if you have kids, you can see them feed the pigs!). Driving around the Andes to get there was exhilarating :)

My husband and I stayed in the bunkhouse in one of the double beds. Only one other person was on our "floor" so it was almost as good as a private room, without the wood fire place. However, there were plenty of blankets to keep us warm in the cooler nights. The vegetarian food was good quality and the packed lunches were just right for me. The lasagna was the best meal, with the sheppard's pie my next favorite and the fettuccine my least favorite. Breakfast was always good. My husband would have liked an extra sandwich thrown in for lunch or seconds for dinner (but he could have asked for that. They were very accommodating). There was also the yummiest oatmeal. The composting toilets are easy to use and have amazing views of the mountains. The Frisbee golf course was really challenging but it was fun trying not to hit the llamas. Edmundo is a superb host. He helped us organize our hikes. We shared a ride out to the Quilotoa crater for $25 (split 4 ways) and walked back to the inn without a guide, and then shared a guide (Miguel) for $25 for our hike in the cloud forest. We had such a good time with Miguel and it was great practicing our limited Spanish with him, so we decided to hire him the next day to do the Rio Toachi Canyon hike. We ended up hiking with his son instead, Giovanni, but he was great as well. Even feeding the llamas and black sheep salt was a highlight here. We met a lot of interesting people at the communal dinner and it was easy to split guides or rides out to hiking locations with other travelers. We took the bus in from Latacunga and a private car back. I think the private car was a better, safer option. All in all a great location. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Black Sheep Inn is a thoughtful, artistic but not pretentious ecolodge in the mountains. It is a great base for hiking, horseback riding, but would also be a great place to hang out and enjoy the views and read and write and do yoga. The staff were very helpful in arranging transportation, you can basically ask to be picked up anywhere eg Airport in Quito, or in city of Quito or even another town. At the end of our stay we had a driver take us to Mindo which is a 5 h drive. So even though this is a remote area, getting there is easy with a private driver, and they also give lots of information on public transportation by bus which is another option we didn't use. The location of the inn provides stunning views, it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The hikes are great, we didn't feel we needed guides, but they were always available for a reasonable fee of $20. The meals at the lodge were family style and the food reminded me of the Moosewood Restaurant (fabulous vegetarian meals). We met lots of Ecuadorians on the weekend and then other travellers during the week. Edmundo was very hospitable and helpful.
This place is perfect if you are active and want to experience the mountains. Be aware of the elevation, you may be short of breath, but if you are healthy you will adapt. This Inn is also very responsible and supportive to the indigenous community. I hope to come back again!

Room Tip: noise travels from room to room easily but most guests were respectful and tried to keep the volume...

We loved Black Sheep Inn. It feels like an old-time Vermont ski lodge in some ways, with communal meals, various different lodging options, interesting and active people to talk with, but with the difference that they come from all over the world. This is not the easiest place to get to--we rented a car, but the road is pretty rough regardless of which direction you take to get to Chugchilan, so a larger car or 4x4 might have been a better idea. Or Black Sheep can arrange transportation from various places, or you can take the bus, but its schedule is not perfect.

Edmundo does indeed keep everything running smoothly and seems to care that everyone has a good time. We did the walk back from Quilitoa, and it was beautiful and interesting, even if it did take almost 5 hours. We hired a guide, and even though Miguel didn't speak much English, and we don't speak much Spanish, he was able to show us the local plants, crops, birds, and villages. We are not vegetarians, but the food was good, especially the breakfast scrambled eggs with onions and peppers, and the spinach lasagna and all the soups. And we appreciated the packed lunch.

We also loved our room at the top of the hill, with the amazing views, even if it did take some huffing and puffing to get there. But the woodstove was great for the late afternoons, and it was very quiet. We got used to the bathroom more quickly than we expected.

The village is interesting too; we were there for the Christmas pageant, which we watched much of one afternoon.

This place is not for everyone; there's no choice of menu, minimal housekeeping service, composting toilets, not everyone speaks English, and relatively expensive compared to some other places in Ecuador.

But for hiking, talking, eating, having a beer, and watching the view, it's great.

Room Tip: We liked the rooms at the top of the property, with private baths, but they do mean a stiff climb ev...

The Black Sheep Inn really is an amazing place. Edmundo the manager was extremely responsive to every email and set up a pick up for us by Cotopaxi with return to Puembo by car which was exactly on time each with with a great driver. The Inn is a labor of love which is a fabulous example of eco tourism at its best- constantly changing and growing and evolving with owners that seek to teach both visitors and the local people sustainable practices in a very comfortable environment. The physical location is breathtaking with incredible views from your room or from the many vantage points. The hikes in the area are superb and range from easy short walks to 5 hour amazing experiences. The area itself is the Andes as it should be - indigenous locals striving to farm in very trying steep country - so cheerful and friendly-

Food is good, digs are comfy, people are awesome- I only wish we had spent a little more time there( we were there for 2 nights and 3 days ) as we just loved it.

Room Tip: We stayed in the private rooms with bathroom up top of the hill above the lodge - super quiet, kille...

I couldn't have asked for a better location--close to some of the best hiking in the world! The staff were fantastic! Especially, Edmundo who added his personal touch to my time there. Wonderful accommodations, views and yummy home-cooked vegetarian food. Highly recommend this place if you want to go a little off the beaten path and see how an ecolodge should be!!!
