“Highlight of our trip - A must stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2012

Everything about this place was amazing. Edmundo is a fantastic host and if you are lucky enough he will play you a few tunes on his guitar. We will look back on our stay at BSI, the hospitality, the panaromic vistas and the staff with fond memories for many years to come. We cannot say enough about this place. We came for the view and stayed because of the hospitality.

Cheers
Victor and Geetha

My husband and I traveled to Ecuador for our honeymoon this summer and had an INCREDIBLE stay at BSI. Edmundo did an amazing job of making us feel at home and welcomed, and Michelle was incredibly helpful via email communication to facilitating our stay in the area. The surroundings are stunning, the inn itself a little gem, very well-kept up, and the food outstanding. The yoga studio was the most beautiful place I have ever practiced yoga. People considering travel to the area should NOT miss a stay at this inn. Outstanding!

Room Tip: The private rooms w/ private bath are up top - w/ beautiful views!

We stayed two nights at the Inn, not nearly long enough. Edmundo and his staff were great. He even came to get us when road construction threatened to strand us about 15k from the lodge.

We had one of the deluxe rooms at the top of the hill. Wonderful views even though it was about 180 steps from the lodge! We live at sea level so we were pretty winded climbing up. Completely worth it though. The rooms were clean and while it was cool and very windy when we were there, there were plenty of blankets to not need a fire.

We were able to do the ridge hike, and hike to the plateau the one full day we were there.

As a carnivore, I can say that the food was great. The soups and the Banana Bread were my favorites.

A note on the roads. Ecuador is on a campaign to redo what appears to be all of their roads. That means a lot of construction. While you can drive through it all, plan on some extra time. At least for this year. We came in the southern route and left via the northern route. The northern route was certainly an easier drive than the southern, however we got to meet some local people while waiting for the construction crew to fill a hole they dug across the road.

A note about my title. There is a new airport being built outside of Quito that will be bigger and at a lower elevation. This will allow larger aircraft to come in and out. And I think allow for direct flights from NYC. If that happens getting to Quito will be a lot easier and faster. Can't wait.

We loved this place!!! Great food, atmosphere, helpful staff, and lots of fun to be had by all! Michelle (owner) was the most helpful person I cooresponded with via email about our trip and she was very resourceful. At the Black Sheep Inn we played frisbee golf, darts, card with other travellers, bought a hand-knitted wool sweater and cap, did the sauna and a tiny hot tub, and went to Quilotoa. We also enjoyed using the yoga room for our morning practice and petting the alpacas. Wish we had arranged to stay longer than the 2 nights.

Room Tip: Can't imagine any of the rooms are a poor choice. All seemed fine, quiet enough and clean. It is...

Edmundo and the local staff are a joy, you feel a part of the mountains and of the community up here. The whole town smiles and waves, and one really feels welcome as a tourist. The facility is expansive, with many layers of decks and porches, and wood burning fires keep each room cozy. The access/ logistics to hiking and horseback riding is made easy by edmundo and local drivers. Feels very family friendly.
I look forward to coming back soon and getting to know more about the Inn!

Room Tip: A few people mentioned cats on the roof causing disturbance at night down low. The top double rooms...

My family and I stayed here for four days. Edmundo is a remarkable manager who leads a remarkable staff providing great hospitality and good food. He helped us with guides for hiking and transport to Ouilotoa Crater Lake and nearby hikes in the Central Andes that surround the place. The accommodations were comfortable and we felt great that they are committed to ZERO waste. The compost toilets were easy to use and very clean. Fire place in every room. Worth every bit of the price. One other thing: the Black Sheep Inn is committed to helping the community of Chugclian develop into a sustainable community with a library, recycling center and other provisions made possible by donations from the founders of Black Sheep Inn. This alone makes it a worthwhile place to stay, in addition to the yummy vegetarian meals.

We had been at the Black Sheep Inn in 2009 and were happy to return this year while hiking the Quilotoa Loop. There is a new manager/owner who is native to Chugchilan named Edmundo and he is eager to make this beautiful and unique hostal a welcome place. The rooms and views are all charming and the ecological standards remain high. I can't think of a more relaxing place to luxuriate after a day of hiking. I will always remember coffee and yoga on the terrace with the sunrise while surrounded by a bowl of mountains.
