Although the place is hidden in the mountains in NorthWestern Bulgaria, I don’t regret going there with my friends. The tour guide was not the what most people would expect, but the guy is very knowledgable and made us laugh while touring.

Once we walked up and through the rocks and saw the view beyond them, it was like nothing else - just makes you stop and think and marvel at the beauty of nature.

These rock formations get better and better and are worth a special journey. Ascend to the top if you can, as the views improve at every level. Warning: the steps are steep and could be quite slippery if wet. But the views of the Balkan Mountain Range are superb. If you are in this area of Bulgaria, you should make a special journey here.

It was a 5-hour drive to get there but we planned our route carefully as this site is close to a Serbian Border post and that was the next stop. The drive was well worth it.

In simple terms the Ottoman incorporated nature into their large fortress by incorporating a wall and steps into these wonderful peaks to provide a high viewpoint above the main fortress.

Once you enter the gate there are seats either side and the thing to do is just sit and wonder at the foresight of the Ottoman planners who made use of the natural facilities. Then if you feel active, climb the steps.

The first section up to the wall is not difficult, but the second set to the top are steep and difficult. Make your own decision but do wear proper shoes and take plenty of water.
