“Excellent family-run restaurant”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

We ate here during our stay in Santo Stefano di Sessanio. The atmosphere is wonderful - simple furnishings, delicious home-cooked food, friendly service, the best house wine we had on our trip, and very reasonably priced. We enjoyed the food so much that we returned to eat a second time. Carmelio was very happy to see us return, treating us as if we were family. I especially liked the chitarra (spaghetti) with zucchini and sausage, the smarmoza (grilled cheese), the chicory, and the lamb was the best I've eaten. Also try the local liqueurs! For 4 of us, we payed €65 for 4 primi, 2 secondi, 2 contorni, water, wine, coffee and liqueur.
I definitely recommend the restaurant and would be keen to stay here if visiting the village again. We also heard that the lentil soup was amazing but we didn't try it.

The bedrooms are clean, the weather is pleasant, the food incredible. The owner cook fresh evey day, I meant, fresh…vegetables, land, pasta. People are friendly and the place is magical! It was a wonderful trip!

What a wonderful surprise to find family-run Agriturismo Il Borgo, an incredible value in a medieval village known for its "albergo diffusio" lodging, costing more than 300 dollars per night. Our cost was 150 Euro for two rooms, dinner and breakfast for 3 persons. We called on the spur of the moment and our daughter who speaks fluent Italian (the owners speak very little English) was able to secure accommodations for the three of us -- two separate rooms with private baths and a shared entrance. The rooms were large, simple, clean and comfortable. While the bathrooms were small, they were adequate and there was plenty of hot water. We all had our best night's sleep because of the cozy fleece lined spread that kept us warm and toasty. Our dining experience in the home-style restaurant was very special. There was no menu, but our couple hosts lovingly prepared one of the best meals of our week touring Abruzzo -- rich lentil and vegetable soup, a regional favorite, light and fluffy hand-made ravioli pomodoro, and a yummy apple dessert with home-made ricotta cheese. We were also served delicious home-made wine and an excellent home-made digestiv. Because we were the only guests in the restaurant, the owners gave us personalized attention and many special treats. Thanks to our daughter's excellent Italian, we felt very much at home. At breakfast we visited the host cook in her spotless kitchen and watched her prepare a ricotta cheese cake she was making for the evening meal. We were sorry we had to leave!
