If you find yourself at Mt Takao and visiting a monkey park, take a short walk (follow the map) to the top of the mountain - just follow the signs for the temple. You will past the first torii gate, and see a small shrine on the left. Then, follow the path and you'll run into a fork. Take the left if you want to climb some stairs, take the right if you just want to walk on a flat path.
I see some people (older people) wearing backpacks and hiking shoes. If you're fairly fit, you probably don't need to - I just wore regular shoes to get to the top. At the temple, there are some small souvenir kiosks and a couple of food areas. Take your time to examine the different worship areas.
After you're done with the temple, make your way down and you can stop at the Buddhist Stupa before you reach the fork.
It was a good walk for us. It'll probably be really pretty during fall as the trees will probably turn color. :)
** Only go here if you find yourself at Mt Takao. We went here only because we wanted to see some monkeys at the Monkey Park. We're glad we went though. There are so many different temples and shrines to see in Japan so it was fun for us.**
