“Haute cuisine and subpar accomodation....”
Reviewed September 18, 2011

After a week of 'camping' in a very basic little farmhouse somewhere in the Centre region, we were very looking forward to some days of luxury in Hotel Hautes roches. The staff was very friendly and the location was good, although the very busy road to Tours was right in front of the hotel and blocked the way to the Loire river. But unfortunately we were underwhelmed by the standard of our 'cave room'. The decor desperately needed a make-over and the overall atmosphere was that of an (dare I say it) old peoples home. But the restaurant easily made up for the poor quality of the accommodation. The food was excellent and the wine divine. The staff in the restaurant was again very friendly and professional and the view of the river stunning. So all in all we had a pleasant stay at Hotel Hautes Roches despite our disappointing room. We would definitely return to dine at the restaurant but look for another hotel to spend the night.....

This was our special night at the end of a 3 week road trip around France. Oh what a night !!!! I spent an hour reading a book sitting in the window frame looking over the river with a wonderful glass of red. We had a gorgeous meal at the restaurant and a lovely night sleep in very comfy beds. Will definately return to our room under the cliff.

Great hotel in superb location for exploring the Loire Valley. Room was very large and had two full height glass doors overlooking the river. Dinner on the terrace each evening was a highlight of the stay. The wine line is very reasonably priced, though the champagne was painfully expensive.

Les Hautes Roches is built into the cliffs along the Loire, and our room was truly cavernous in size. There were very few other guests when we were there, so it was extremely quiet. However, given the thickness of the walls, I imagine you could have a rock-concert going on next door and be oblivious as to its existence. You won't find elevators, at least not in the cliff-side portion of the hotel, so if stairs are a problem, that is something that should be addressed when making your reservation. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed the day we were there, but we did enjoy a lovely bottle of wine in the garden, overlooking the Loire. Service was friendly and welcoming and I would gladly return.

We stayed in one of the "troglodyte" rooms at this hotel for one night. The decor was funky and it was an unusual experience to stay in a cave. The bathroom was terrific with a really great shower.
We had dinner at the restaurant - the food was good, but not mind blowing. More presentation than taste. I had booked our table and room months in advance, so had expected that we would get a nice table overlooking the river. Oddly, the restaurant staff seated locals/non-guests at the choicer tables overlooking the river, and the hotel guests were relegated to a side terrace. I fussed a bit, and they gave us a table that was within neck craning distance of a river view.
Breakfast is continental and nothing special: fruit, yogurt, and bread.
All in all, I left feeling lukewarm. If we return to Tours, I would probably try another hotel.

This is a gourmet experience first rather than a luxury hotel. What stops it from being luxury is lack of obvious room service. Slightly reluctant to order room service without reference to any sort of menu. Very little information about amenities in the room. Mini bar could have offered more than a couple of very expensive bottles of water and a half bottle of champagne. Plastic glasses in the bathrooms are more reminisent of a Campanile and the standard of shampoo etc was low and didn't even include a conditioner. It's not the prettiest of Loire locations set beside a busy road but the rooms are a different sort of experience. Given the prices charged it should have been better. The staff were friendly. If you are there for the food then it would be hard to beat.

I guess I'm used to the Relais & Chateaux symbol standing for excellence.
This hotel misses too many tricks. The staff are ever so nice, but:
- they're always on the phone
- the service is incredibly slow: - 20 mins waiting for breakfast (even the coffee), 35 mins waiting for a beer on the terrace (it was a Monday, the restaurant is closed on a Monday, but I'm a guest, so PLEASE can I have a beer - just a beer?)
The view from the hotel is actually rather poor - unless you like large concrete water towers (background) and busy lorries on the road (foreground).
We didn't eat, because the restaurant is closed Sun and Mon (that's more than 25% of the time).
I guess the clue was that it was still available as a late booking when all the other R&C hotels around the Loire Valley were fully booked.
Oh, and despite the price, they still want another €5 for Internet - and the mess of a system that follows, just to get on the web, oh dear.... what good can that possibly achieve? It's just plain annoying.
