“Fascinating”

apart from the obvious historic aeroplanes, the visitor centre gives a very enlightening picture of just how much effort is put into maintaining the machines. I was amazed at the amount of time is aeroplanes are in the air.

“The Pride of Lincolnshire”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2012

I live local to Coningsby so am spoilt when the planes come overhead on their way .
.to displays etc.
I used to run a guesthouse nearby and had lots of guests who came specifically to visit Coningsby and other RAF attractions and were never dissapointed and had only praise for the attention given to them at the Visior Centre.

“Interesting visit.”

Interesting visit. The guide to the hanger was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. However, it would be nice to offer two separate versions of the tour; briefer ones for those who are not interested in the engineering technicalities of the planes or who are there with young children, and also the current tour as it is.

“Well worth a visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2011

We were in Lincolnshire for a few days recently so decided to visit the BBMF down at Coningsby. Upon arrival you enter the visitor centre/shop which is free. You can also book a guided tour of the hangar here which is a must!

The visitor centre is informative with various items relevant to the Battle of Britain on display. There's also a "Lancaster Exhibition" in another room, which had various stories on the wall from those who flew in the Lancaster as well as a scale model of said plane.

We paid for the guided tour and had around 20 minutes to wait. We were made aware though upon booking the tour that the Lancaster was not there nor were the Hurricanes, which was a touch disappointing, but understandable given the nature of the BBMF (they were away on display duty).

Our guide (whose name I did not get) was a nice chap who took around 8 of us into the hangar. He began by telling us stories of the Dakota which was in front of us, before being greeted by the only full time pilot (and the boss) the BBMF have. You could see by the way the pilot joked and spoke to the guide that he had an awful lot of time, and respect for him. From there we were shown various machine guns from various BoB aircraft before being shown the legendary Rolls Royce Merlin engines!!

The guide also spoke at length about what the fitters working on the Dakota did whilst based within the BBMF and how they were selected. Next up were several impressive Spitfire's. The guide spoke at great length about the Spitfire's, with some fascinating stories, some comical, some very sad. We were also shown the Chipmunk they use to train in.

As mentioned, it was a shame that the Lancaster was missing, as I'd loved to have seen it up close, but our guide spoke very fondly of it, with a tear in his eyes at times. It was at this point we discovered that our guide was indeed a Lancaster pilot which made the tour even better IMO. He took us back into the visitor centre and into the Lancaster exhibition, where he gave us much detail and many tales and facts of this legendary aircraft.

All in all a highly enjoyable 2 hours made even more poignant by our guide who was excellent!!

“Well worth a visit and an excellent guided tour of the hanger”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2011

As stated by other reviewers, this is a "not to be missed" visit in Lincolnshire. The Visitor Centre is free of charge, however it serves as a waiting area for the main event, which is a guided tour of the BBMF hanger with the viewing of the historic aircraft.

Our tour was excellent - the guide was very informative and knowledgeable. The tour lasted at least 75 minutes with all of the aircraft at their positions in the hanger.

I recommend that you call in advance to check when the aircraft may be away on displays. Eg: in the week that we were in Lincolnshire, the Lancaster, a Spitfire and a Hurricane were away from Weds to Sat, so it was useful to know, so we planned a visit in the early part of the week.
