“A good end to our holiday..”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2006

We're a family that returned to the mainland after 2 weeks at 4 islands and decided to spend our last night near Rafina so took highspeed catamaran to there, thought it would be nicer than Piraeus port and a bit more handy for the airport. In our two-roomed suite, having soft carpet under foot for the first time since leaving home felt like luxury. The showers were superb. The pool was lovely, warm enough to get into without flinching and we found it quiet with plenty of spare sunloungers to choose from! The sea is also right there in front of you, down a few steps from the pool. Just have to tiptoe over a few stones to gently shelving soft sand. We were permitted to keep our room until we needed to leave for the airport (1.30pm) and we were able to reach the airport easily in about 25mins on the hotel minibus for 20 euros. The only downside - I think we were expecting a little more of the buffet breakfast, nothing special, usual continental fare, though the evening buffet was good value and worthing taking advantage of. Overall, we made a good choice with this hotel and wish we could have stayed longer.

  • Liked — convenience of beach and pool and handy for airport
  • Disliked — This was the most expensive accommodation of our holiday, but we did stay a modest studios
  • Tips/Secrets — If you like a cuppa at your convenience, you must bring your own electric kettle to Greece!!

The Attica Beach Hotel is situated at Mati, about 5km from Rafina, the port town that provides easy access to some of the Cyclades islands - such as Tinos and Mykonos. The Hotel itself is a 30 euro taxi ride from Athens International Airport, so it can provide an alternative stopover hotel for island hoppers who don't want to endure central Athens. Mati is part of a coastal suberb, surrounded by pine trees. There is another hotel close by and some snack bars and restaurants in season. The Attica Beach Hotel has a distinctly 1960s feel about it - you could imagine it appearing in one of those black and white Greek films that always seem to showing on Greek TV during the siesta. As a result, much of the hotel's glamour has faded, its public areas and exteriors are well-worn. At the time of our visit, early June 2004, the swimming pool was being repaired. But don't let any of this put you off. The carpeted rooms were functional, clean and the shower's water pressure was the best I have ever experienced in Greece. Our side sea view was just that, with the occasional pigeon landing on the small, unattractive balcony. Booked through a popular UK-based Meditteranean hotel website on a half board basis, it was outstanding value when a direct comparison is made with any central Athens hotel. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful, while the evening buffet meal was a pleasant surprise - good quality Greek and international food. In fact, for a stopover, it was more than adequate. The taxi fare to Rafina port was around 8 euros, so you have to price-in the cab fares when considering this option.
