Cullinan is a picturesque little village, famous for the biggest diamond ever discovered in 1905, steeped in history, with quant buildings, tree lined streets and a variety of good restaurants. Today the mine still produces 5000 carats of diamonds per day and supplies 25% of the world’s gem quality diamonds. Sundays especially the village is buzzing with bikers, street markets and visitors.

I enjoyed this tour even though we did not go underground (had no time so only had an afternoon tour). we arranged through the concierge at our hotel to pick up at 1 and back at 5pm. The tour itself was about 2 hours and we asked a lot of questions. We were still back a bit early. The driver was really great and very interesting to talk to.

We didn't take any diamonds home with us unfortunately. If you think you might - price before you get here so yo ucan tell if you are getting a good deal.

The Cullinan Diamond Mine is a large functioning diamond mine not far from Pretoria. It is the site of the discovery of the largest diamond, the Cullinan Diamond. The tour includes a presentation in a theatre, touching on the history of the mine, the famous diamond and what became of it, and information about diamonds in general. Then follows a tour through the mine – I opted for the standard tour, while there is an option for a longer “underground” tour that includes a trip in the mine itself.
My tour was pretty cool – a walk through some of the mine, seeing the main shaft and the huge motors that drive the elevators deep into the ground, then over to a viewing platform overlooking the large, open-cut mine. You don’t appreciate the size of the mine until you see it up close. Very impressive.
My tour was around 2 hours and was great. Informative, interesting and (lock up your wallets, boys) there is even a shop at the end of the tour offering discounts on a wide range of diamonds!
Importantly, the Cullinan Diamond Mine gives back to the local community, setting up schools and medical centres to help. Great to see big business giving a little back!
