We have just returned from ten days at this hotel, which we enjoyed very much. As others have said its main business is weddings, sometimes two or three a day. The weddings seem to be fairy princess affairs, but we could use the pool throughout and the wedding guests seemed not even to notice, let alone mind.

Probably what makes this hotel stand out is the staff. They really are very good, create a wonderful ambience, and for us made the stay.

We had a wonderful room that took four of us and had a view over to Vesuvius. There was a big bathroom with two basins, wi-fi (sometimes ran a bit slowly), a lobby area, silk walls, air-conditioning, a grand bed and a balcony; oh, and a spa bath that leaked a bit.

Service was good. Danillo, who had worked in a restaurant in Knightsbridge spoke good English and got things done. After a hot reconnaisance on foot the first afternoon, we discovered that there really is not much in the immediate area and thought we would hire a car. As our party included two at another nearby hotel, we wanted a six seater and Danillo spent a morning and much of an afternoon phoning round trying to find one. It was not his fault he could not track one down We made do with the "shuttle", which is a Fiat eight seater that (for a fee) ran us to the local station about three miles away and dropped he other two at their hotel. The expense of this was much less than a hire car would have been.

There were some delightful Italian eccentricities, like the taps on the basins labelled in English Hot and Cold, but on the wrong way round on one basin; 999 channels on the TV (many radio), but none I coud find, English (I didn't have the patience to try them all, but I did check that 999 actually had programming).

The food was good. A good spread for breakfast an lunch and dinner available with a reasonable menu choice that changed every day. Quality was good, one or two dishes we had ere excellent. I have seen another review criticise the vegetarian options. In my opinion that is Italy, not just La Sonrisa. As a family of rampant meat and fish eaters, we had no problems.

The only downsides for me was the constant tacky music, though they did turn it down when we asked and the less-than-central location, requiring transport to the station. However we had a wonderful time at a price that was very reasonable for the faciliies we had, compared to say the centre of Sorrento. My daughter wants to go back and I will be happy to take her. What more can you say?

We stayed at the La Sonrisa for 5 nights as a bit of a treat, rather than any chains that were around the Naples area. We were certainly not disappointed, the Staff were excellent...extremely friendly with us & our 2 boys, always asking how we were & if they could help with anything at all. The food was excellent & for a 5 Star hotel, sitting by the pool with a waiter served cocktail was as cheap as buying a drink in a bar in the UK. The room was extremely spacious, a large bathroom with jacuzzi bath comfortable beds in a luxurious setting.

We had read a some reviews before booking & a few people complained about there being too many weddings when they were there. Well, it's quite clear in the details that the hotel specialises in weddings so it was to be expected. We had one night where there was loud music & fireworks but to be honest it wasn't a huge problem, our children slept through & we enjoyed the music!!

All in all, I think the hotel deserves its 5 star rating & I've already recommended several people to use the hotel if they're visiting either Naples, Pompeii or the surrounding area.

Aircon, free wifi, room fridge & stacks of space in a quad room & all for the price of couple of rooms in a holiday inn express.

Our family had two very fine days here. A facinating place. The kids loved the pool, we had very fine rooms and we only met very kind, kompetent and serviceminded staff. Fine place to stay when you wish to explore Vesuv, Herculanum and Pompeij area - makes it easy to combine cultural experiences and summer relaxation :-) Pernille

This is quite possibly the tackiest hotel I have ever stayed in. More pink chintz than a bridal shop and just as much bad wedding music.
Dinner menu limited with only pasta and pesto as a vegetarian option. Breakfast was ok with plenty of choice to meet every taste although the eggs looked greasy and overcooked.
The pool was a hit with my daughter but it is stupidly deep and not at all child friendly. The constant weddings made us feel in the way and the parties late into the evening made it noisy and hard to relax let alone get a child to sleep.
It is also only really convenient if you are driving and was a long slog to anywhere by train.
That said the staff were very helpful and polite and made what could have been a disaster bearable.

A strange eclectic mix of a hotel. Very polite staff, accommodating. Had a family room with balcony which had a nice view across the valley. Just don't look down as a lot of the hotels extra tables and stuff made it look a little untidy. Room was clean, cool and had a lovely bathroom. We got the impression the hotel was not as exclusive as it used to be with pictures of various stars staying there over the years. Beautiful grounds and lots of photo opportunities. A couple of weddings going on - amazing wedding cakes. Never seen so many tiers. Children felt they were in a princess castle. We had a dip in the pool which was welcome due to heat but not v child friendly. V deep and luckily our kids are confident enough in arm bands. More of an ornamental pool. Had dinner and the options were limited for kids. Chips were a bit uncooked in the middle. Staff very accommodating and good with kids. Breakfast nice. Enjoyed our stay but glad it was for one night.

Room Tip: Great hotel. Welcome children but not a child friendly hotel in terms of facilities
