An apparently modern village with not much going for it apart from it being the start of an excellent mountain/gorge path to Puerto Santiago - full details from tiny tourist office by bus stop.

Over the past few years, some walking trails have been closed for safety reasons, so before setting out on a walk, check with the local tourist office that it is open. Some of the walking guide books have walks which are closed or have been re-routed.

Round Santiago del Teide there are three or four really nice walks ranging from just over an hour to up to four hours. It can get quite chilly in the winter if the clouds are low, so you might need to bring a jacket. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants in Santiago del Teide and also a lovely picnic area.

Lovely little walk up to the shrine (good footwear needed - very steep.) If you need a loo when you're in the town, try the town hall!

was lovely, wasn't as cold at the top as expected but was beautiful to see. The air is still quite thin up there. The bus journey howvere is a bit twisty turny and our son got very sick so the lady running the excursion let him sit at the front of the bus and provided with a sick bag. The staff on the mounytainwere also very helpful and were so nice to him when he was sick, also providing little sick bag for him. He was not bothered it was more the embarrassment and inconvenience. It definitely didn't spoil his experience.

Santiago del Teide is an attractive small town in the mountains. The Ayuntamiento (Council) building is an imposing edifice on the town square, which also features the statue of an ancient Guanche king. On all sides are soaring hills, and at this time of year the almond blossom flowers on the land surrounding the town. There is a handsome church near the council offices, and a Visitors' Centre (with eating facilities) for the Volcano Chinyero nearby. Down the street are several bars, cafes and restaurants. It is a good place to stop off en route to Masca or Buenavista, or to rest and recuperate after a walk in the hills.
