Description: The casually chic "1860 Tradición" restaurant offers the opportunity to experience traditional Spanish cuisine with an exciting modern twist. Chef Francis Paniego's creative breakfast, lunch and dinner menus are based on fine local produce and the region's unique cooking styles. With its towering ceilings, dramatically angled walls, seductive curves and tilted windows the dining room exemplifies Gehry's unconventional approach to space. Walls adorned with large scale reproductions of his original sketches for the hotel encircle tables flanked with scarlet chairs and set with fine linens. Floor-to-ceiling glass panels frame the pretty village of Elciego along with the historic church of San Andres.

This restaurant is local in the Hotel Marques de Riscal in Elciego, Spain, which is a small town in the middle of the Rioja regon. The hotel was designed by Gehry and is inspired by Guggenheim. It this wild looking building standing in the middle of a bunch of vineyards. If you want to get a close look at the building you mus have a reservation to eat here or be staying at the hotel. You can't just walk in and go see it. The entire property is gated and you must check in before being allowed to enter the property. There are also security guards so you can't just go wandering around. We went to the Bistro for lunch. There is also a nicer restaurant in the hotel but it is a little more expensive so we chose the Bistro. My boyfriend and I both chose the prix fix menu for around 45 Euros per person. This included a bottle of wine. The service was excellent and so was the food. We had a 5 course meal for lunch and we were there for 2 hours! We sat, talked, drank and enjoyed our food. My favorite was the first course which was a really good cheese with a crispy thin cracker drizzled in honey. It was sooo good! The main course I chose was a lamb cheek with a sweet apple sauce on it. It was also very good. The restaurant is on the second floor (which is a tall second floor), so when we were done eating we went out to the balcony to take pictures and get a beautiful look out into the Rioja region. This was definitely a highlight of our trip to the Rioja.

Excellent food, wonderful service at this 'second' of Bodegas Marques de Riscal's restaurants. Handled gluten free diner very well. Wonderful dining room inside the Frank Gehry building. International clientele means wait staff is fluent in English. Plan on a nice leisurely meal to enjoy all the details.

We visited this restaurant back in July, it was a beautiful summer night, the hotel is a masterpiece, the pictures never do the justice unless you go and see it by your eyes, we set at the terrace, what a contrast, the contemporary architecture in the middle of the vineyards surrounded from one side the medieval La Guarda village, the silence, the breeze, the wine, everything was amazing accept some of the dishes which we beleive weren't up to the standard, some of us chose the fish of the day, which was hake, nobody liked it, others took the code fish, was better but nothing amazing, the rest of the meal was good, like jamon, cheese plates, etc...but oveall the food was not as impressive as the place itself.

We were 4 on a trip to the Wine region of La Rioja and wine tasting, and had chosen this for an evening meal in the Bistro 1860. We had prebooked from the U.K but on the Wednesday evening we were there it was largely empty. It has a contempary feel to the restaurant with quirky red chairs that looked distinctly uncomfortable but in the end were O.K. We had a large lunch at a winery so chose 3 courses a la carte, rather than the tasting menu . Service was attentive and good and like others noted it was perhaps too quick, my wife had hardly finished her first course when it was taken away for the meatballs . Two of us had White Asparagus one as a starter and the other in a tuna, green salad . It was the season for Asparagus and this was soggy, and dare I say tasted ,like out of a jar or tin . the other two had the croquettes for a starter and were also underwhelmed , very bland, not at all what we expected from this establishment , especially as we had Asparagus , and crouqettes the subsequent night in a different restaurant and the difference was considerable. Two of us had fish dishes which were superb , and the Cava sorbet was especailly nice . However the service and the delicous fish and Sorbet could not out weigh rushed service in an empty restaurant with soggy apsargus .
