The Capture Site Monument is well worth a visit. The face of Madiba in rods, only to come into focus when you stand at a certain angle, the long walk to freedom path leading to this monument and the simple barn housing the museum is a fitting tribute and reminder of the man that is being honored. We visited the monument with our 12-year old twin boys. I was surprised to find them reading the posters and asking questions about the exhibition in the shed. It could easily become quite cumbersome to any teenagers. Young children will be bored, but can easily be entertained on the big lawns outside the shed. It was pleasing to find this site full of visitors, but not commercialized at all. Even the entrance fee is a donation only.

“Sculpture monument not to be missed”
Reviewed April 28, 2014

The walk through the interpretation centre and then down to the monument not to be missed. A great opportunity to talk to the kids about Nelson Mandela and what he stood for. The sculpture is unique and breathtaking. Glad we did not fly from JoBurg to Durban but drove down through the Midland Meander.

“Detailed information on Mandela history”
Reviewed April 27, 2014

Display is detailed but a bit dry - not for young kids - they were bored in minutes. All posters and lots of writing. Well worth a trip, though, especially if you have not been to the Apartheid Museum

“School visit to the KwaZulu Natal Midlands”
Reviewed April 25, 2014

I took the children from my school on a day excursion to the Kwazulu Natal Midlands. Our first stop was The Nelson Mandela Capture Site. It is located in Howick just off the Tweedie off ramp. Presently there is no entry fee charge, however this may change in the near future. The area is extremely relaxing and beautiful surrounded by fantastic trees. The entry point is a temporary building depicting images and information on the great Nelson Mandela. At the exit a statue is located in the distance. After a long walk to the bottom the image of Nelson Mandela emerges. It is a 3 dimensional artwork made from steel columns. It is amazing how the statue was constructed. The place also has a restaurant, and souvenir shops. It is a worth a short visit if you are in the region.

We took a short drive to Howick to visit the Howick Falls. The water falls is a beautiful natural attraction and great for photographing. People are well protected in the balcony area as it is very high. An African souvenir market is located at the entrance by the parking lot. This tourist attraction area needs to be upgraded because it has a look of neglect over the years. There is no entrance fee.

After our short stay at the falls we proceeded to Queen Elizabeth Park and Nature Reserve. There is also no entrance fee. It is a good place for a picnic and hike. The hiking trail is well laid out and easy for children to walk on. We decided to take the shorter route. We only managed to see a lonesome zebra. There are other wildlife located in the park which can be seen if you want to complete the entire hiking trail.

The Midlands area is a good place to visit while travelling between Johannesburg and Durban

“very well designed”
Reviewed April 23, 2014

The site was well signposted and easy to find though not an overcrowded tourist trap. It is worth reading all the info in the exhibits before going on to see the monument. I love the fact that you can only see the monument properly from one position, it cleverly portrays the fact that Mandela was found here whilst in hiding in the countryside
