“Mellow midday meal meandering in the midlands”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2014

La Lampara is a pleasant experience from the start. They will accept reservations at short notice using SMS, and responded within four minutes with an affirmative! I requested an outdoor table, and they arranged that for me. The restaurant is situated in the countryside of the midlands, and is part of the midlands meander route. The last four or five km is along a good quality gravel road, which is fine in dry conditions, but may be a bit slippery in the rain. The restaurant is in an old milkshed, which has been renovated to provide a lovely setting, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The farm atmosphere is very "Italian" and the menu is Italian. There is a relatively short menu, with 6 starters and about 12 main courses. There are a number of seafood dishes, duck, chicken, lamb, and beef to choose from, as well as at least one vegetarian dish as starter or main. There is a also a separate pizza menu with an excellent range of choices. The service is excellent, with staff very attentive, very friendly, and helpful. They were willing to make a substitution for the prawns in the one meal. The quality of the food is excellent, and is always consistently good. This is the place that I take international visitors to as a great experience, and I also take my mother there once a year when she visits, and she loves it. This mean I had pizza, which is why I did not indicate one of the best meals ever, but previous meals have certainly been up there with the best. The pizza is a thin-dough one, with lots of toppings. It is light, and wholesome, which means it is not too heavy for the drive home! They don't rush you, and you can sit and enjoy the peaceful countryside. It would make a great romantic dinner for two as well! I have not seen a lot of children there, so I am not sure that they encourage families with small children. It is a little bit on the expensive side, but not inordinately so.

“Italian cuisines finest”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 26, 2013

A slice of Tuscany on our doorstep during our recent trip to the Natal midlands. A beautiful comy and cosy and friendly restaurant in the the lovely countryside. Excellent and delicious fresh food with very hospitable and friendly staff and personal attention by Pino, who recommended the most divine dishes. Italian fare with great music, from the wine, starters to mains to the lovely gelato to our Italian coffee, both my husband and I felt we were in Tuscany enjoying the wonderful lunch and serene countryside . The menu always changes and we welcomed the refreshing ideas to pasta and pizza. There was additional vegetarian menu as well. We will be back for more of Italy.

Thanks to Pino and his excellent staff. I highly recommend this superb restaurant for a day out visit and enjoy brunch, lunch or dinner.

“You can only leave happy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2013

We have been to La Lampara a few times, in fact we even had our wedding reception here.

Having tried authentic Italian food in Rome, the food at La Lampara is certainly in the same league!

The service is exceptional and we have always been made to feel welcome.

“Mediocre”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2013

Mediocre = not good but not bad!
Perhaps we expected too much, not sure....
We were a large group, and we had heard so much about the restaurant, we couldn't wait to try it out!
We left feeling disappointed. We did not feel it was a good value for money meal.
The meal was ok, but certainly not great!
