The large shaded garden provides an idyllic spot to wine away lazy summer days, whilst sharing charcuterie and mezze boards. The Italian inspired menu caters to a wide range of tastes that is complimented by award winning wines from the winery and surrounding area. Both the 'Backyard' (braai area) and Bar are popular with locals in the evenings, with a live music a weekly occurrence. The restaurant is open daily from 10am for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

“Quality not very reliable”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2013

We had dinner here last week, and I've eaten here a few times over the last few years. I've always found the quality to be either very good or very bad. Not very consistent, I heard a rumour that they have a new chef, so was looking forward to Dinner.

Unfortunately the quality was once again inconsistent. Started was a bit of a disaster (gritty salad, surprisingly thick slices of meat for carpaccio), main was OK, desert was fantastic.

Such a shame for such a good venue and location.

“New management have managed to ruin top restaurant”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 12, 2013

We were gathered there to celebrate family and ended up mourning the loss of a great restaurant, farewell poplars, you will be missed.

Poplars was known as one of the prestigious dining spots in durbanville, situated a lovely wine farm, you could have the finest cuisine with great service.

We made the mistake of going while there was a function of 30 people going on, and the waiter made out as if it was our fault for choosing such a bad night to come. A restaurant of this level should not let you suffer because it is busy, they should either be able to cope with volumes or inform you that they don't have the capacity to cater for your party.

After waiting for an hour and half our order was finally taken, in this time I noticed that other patrons who also were not important enough to be part of the function and therefore not important enough to be served getting grumpy, I saw one lady complain to a waiter who walked away while rolling his eyes at her.

After waiting for a long time we were presented with cold starters accompanied by cold attitudes, th starters did taste good. It may have been the delicate combination of flavours but most likely it was the hunger we were experiencing.

The main course finally arrived and, keeping with poplar's new style, was a disappointment. Since the starters had taken the edge off our hungers, we could critically judge the food based on its flavours and presentation rather than a biological imperative. My steak was supposed to come with rocket, the steak must have eaten most of the rocket on the way over, it was definitely raw enough to be as hungry as I was.

The other guests at my table would not write home about their meals either.

Some positives, the waitress was pleasant and did try to make the best of a bad situation and the wine was good.

I won't be returning any time soon, luckily there are enough great restaurants close by. If you drive on for a few minutes you'll get to cassia at ntida. Go there instead.

“Getting laid”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2013

My wife(Sonja) and 16 friends went to this venue and this was the email sent to them:

Good Morning, Jamie Lee

Re: Hugely disappointing, over charged experience

We were quoted for:

A HIGH TEA

Consisting of scones, fruit scones, finger sandwiches and pastries

When we arrived, there was one canister of hot water, a couple of sachets of tea ( for 17 people)
We also had to go find the waiter to be so kind as to provide us with sugar and sweeteners.
When the food arrived it consisted of:

Slices of ciabbatta with either salmon or meat, the scones were not bad, we also received 2 bowls of dry muffins ( no butter, jams, etc.)

We asked for orange juice, received 3 litres ( it is a 1 litre container ) for which we were charged R 240. R 80 a litre. When I queried this with you, you said we received 2 litres of orange juice in a jug,

How do you fit 2 litres in a 1 litre jug?

There was no pastries.

We also got charged an extra R 600 + for coffees ( apparently for 38 cups)

We had no attentive service, we continuously had to go ask for extra milk, hot water, etc., but were charged a full service fee.

Needless to say these 17 people were very disappointed and will not refer your restaurant for these kind of occasions.

In conclusion - The owner "David" contacted Sonja a couple of days later, listened and would report back.

We are still waiting for a response. There are othe similar and better venues, but they decided on this one.

A place to avoid though.

“Great lunch on the veranda!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

On a recent drive through the country, we decided on a whim, to pull into Poplars for a late lunch. What a pleasure! We all had different hand stretched flatbreads and some salad, with lovely wine that was recommended from some neighbouring wine farms. It is also such an amazing setting, where you can totally relax with friendly, helpful staff. Is hoping to pop in for some dinner in the near future.

“Disappointing. Taken advantage of.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2013

Celebrated a friend's baby shower at Poplars. Totally over-priced. Paid R85 pp for tea, a half a scone, salmon sandwich and a dry muffin. No butter or cheese. Paid 10% extra for no service, as trays were placed on table and we had to help ourselves. Had to get up and pour our own coffee and tea too. Paid and additional R264 for three liters of orange juice that we did not ask for. Had to pay extra for coffee too. Total rip-off and they won't see me again soon.
