Description: Nestled between mature gardens on the beautiful D'Aria Wine Farm, Poplars Restaurant is housed in a heritage Cape Dutch Farmhouse, one of the oldest in the Durbanville Wine Valley. The elegantly decorated rooms provide for intimate but relaxed winter evenings in front of the many open fires. The large shaded garden provides an idyllic spot to wine away lazy summer days, whilst sharing charcuterie and mezze boards. The Italian inspired menu caters to a wide range of tastes that is complimented by award winning wines from the winery and surrounding area. Both the 'Backyard' (braai area) and Bar are popular with locals in the evenings, with a live music a weekly occurrence. Only 30 minutes from both Cape Town city centre and the International airport, Poplars is the ideal escape for conferences, corporate events and private events, including weddings. The restaurant is open daily from 10am for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Poplars was a favourite, but the food and service has deteriorated somewhat. Still a stunning setting. Favourites are the duck and lamb parcels. The desert menu stamped on the paper table cloths was an interesting touch.

The venue is lovely. the music however was terrible pop music (completely inappropriate) and destroyed any sense of tranquility that the location should have held, and really left me wondering if I was in a decent restaurant or a main road sports bar.

The food was terrible, really awful. Dinner at the Spur would have been better. I had the wild mushroom risotto as a starter which was a bland, overcooked mush. My main was the pasta, ratatouille which was again overcooked to the point of being soggy. The sauce tasted like it came straight out a can, and the veg was just nasty.

My colleagues also sent their meals back partially eaten, the duck starter and paella looked awful, the paella looked more like risotto with an unnecessary layer of oil, the duck looked like wood chips... Terrible.

The staff were ok, but didn't ask why 6 courses were left uneaten

During to weeks in Capetown, we chose to eat at Poplars twice! In fact, I loved my meal so much the first time that I ordered it on the second trip. We had excellent service at Poplars, and the Pinotage selection is wonderful. Pinotage definitely became my favorite wine after enjoying it at Poplars and then later all over Capetown. The area around Poplars is also beautiful - love the garden and being able to eat outside.

Clearly, the owners, management and staff of Poplars are trying very hard. From the reservation, which was handled very professionally, the very friendly welcome and the enthusiastic service, this is very apparent. It is also the impression created by the web-page, the menu and the restaurant's ambiance. Unfortunately, the results fall somewhat short. The food varies between quite good and only average, the service, whilst always friendly, is not really qualified and attention is haphazard. All this whilst the prices already reflect the ambition.
