Villa Rica
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 10, 2011

Sicily is a big island. If you do not have several weeks, we don't recommend trying to get to all corners of the province. For a focused experience of the Northeastern area, this is the best option. We have traveled throughout Italy and France staying mostly in agriturismi. Villa Rica may be the best one yet. The structure is new and impeccable. The rooms are very big. You will not find air conditioning or stand-up showers but if you travel in Europe you will know this is not uncommon. The food was excellent. The rooms were very spacious. The land has excellent hiking right from your room. The view are fabulous. I don't think it's possible to find better service. Alfredo, Linda, and Natoli are top notch service providers. From this Agri, you can reach on day trips some great areas. Cefalu, Tindari, capo di Milazzo, Messina, Isole Eolie, Catania, the Nebrodi, the Madonie, Taormina. However, to experience Catania, we recommend staying at The Liberty Hotel for a few days. Catania is a bit "casino" to drive in but the city center is well worth the experience. Some additional opinions and commentaries - Please note, this was our first time there so our sample size is small. In addition to the NE quadrant, we spent time in Aceriale, Siracusa, and Agrigento: For those of you who have experienced small Italian towns in the Veneto, Alto Adige, le Marche, Tuscony, Emilia-Romagna, and the like, Sicilian cities are going to be out of sync with your expectations. The larger towns are chaotic in the genre or Naples. Also similar to the popular areas of Compania, we found most cities in Sicily had challenges with trash collection. The natural beauty of the land, warmness of the people and consistently outstanding food more than made up for this observation. We will return to Villa Rica. The experience was exceptional.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great. You can't go wrong.

The views are wonderful, the food was outstanding and the room was excellent. Our large room overlooked the surrounding rural landscape all the way out to Mediterranean and the Aeolian Islands. The food at the restaurant served the best food we had in Italy and tasted like the food my Nonna, who came from the region, cooked . Much of the food is grown locally or on the property itself. The restaurant is very popular with locals, which is a great endorsement.
The staff speak English and are helpful and friendly. The hotel is well signed from the Patti Autostrada exit and is close to the Greek and Roman ruins of Tindarri as well as numerous incredible villages perched on mountain tops.
For a wonderful relaxing rural Sicilian escape featuring wonderful food, incredible views clean, well appointed rooms, i cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.

Villa Rica is in one of the most beautiful settings on the northern coast of Sicily. Among the orange trees set high on a hill overlooking the Aeolian Islands, this refurbished farm house offers perfection in Italian agriturismo. With its simple spotless rooms and rustic dining area, the Natoli family welcomes you with open arms to their hotel like you are part of their family. Jeanette and her three boys; Alfredo, Francesco and Willie are always around to help you, offer advise, wait on you or even have a friendly chat.

The food is amazing. Each evening we were presented with a bevy of antipasti to taste, a first dish of pasta or rice, an entree and a dessert. All dishes with local flavor and a pleasure to the palate. We even tried risotto with strawberries. Many evenings we never made it to the entree because we enjoyed just tasting the different Sicilian specialties.

Villa Rica is located near the autostrada and it was quite easy to take day trips to; Tindari, Milazzo, Messina, Taormina or even Mt. Etna. You can also take ferries to the Aeolian Islands.

We highly recommend this property to be included in your Sicilian vacation.

This place is a true gem – astonishingly good value too. Villa Rica is set in lovely rolling countryside with stunning views of the Aeolian Islands. We could sit up in bed looking directly at Stromboli’s volcano smoking out to sea – an unbeatable view. The farm buildings have been lovingly renovated to an very high standard into a stylish, comfortable and understated hotel and restaurant. It is very easy to find from the motorway (a practical 10 mins well signposted drive – although from the hotel it feels a million miles away).
The food is a real highlight. Most of the ingredients for dinner and breakfast are either fresh from Villa Rica’s working farm or from local suppliers. The food is simply, skilfully and (most importantly) tastily prepared by the chef. The mushroom tart and caponata were the best we have ever had. It was a real shame to leave. Despite the rain we had a lovely time. Alfredo and his family (who have lived at Villa Rica for generations) are perfect unobtrusive hosts. The dedication, care and sensitivity they have taken with the restoration project really make Villa Rica a great place to stay either for a short escape or longer holiday.
For those, like us, who require wheelchair access and disabled adjustments, this place has been PROPERLY converted (unlike so many other places we visited).

We stayed four nights at this agriturismo in September 2009. This is an excellent place to stay if you wish to stay in a quiet country environment and where the food is traditional prepared from local produce. The food was excellent and in quantities that we had to ask to be reduced since we were unable to eat everything that was served.

The location is perfect considering that most agriturismos are out of the way and often very hard to get to. We were ten minutes away from the town of Patti (and the motorway) which is on the northern coast of the island. We had a beautiful view of the coast from our room since the place is located up a mountain side and windows face the coast. Even though we were fairly close to the motorway, we could not hear any noise from it at all and you had the impression that you were way out in the country. Therefore, sleeping was great. Rooms are large and well kept. This agriturismo has been open for just over 1 year. You can't tell by the quality of the service. You would think that they have been doing this for years. The agriturismo is run by the Natoly family who renovated the family farm buildings to accomodate an agriturismo. They are quite friendly and we much appreciated their service and the fact that we could talk at length with them.

The price for the room and half-board was quite reasonable. The wine and bottled water was included in the price, something that is quite rare. The location is ideal for visiting the northern and eastern regions of the island.

I would definitely recommend this place for the food, wine, location, rooms and especially for the quality of the service received and friendlyness of the owners, the Natoli brothers and sister.

We stayed for 5 nights at the end of June 09 to celebrate our 1st Wedding anniversary.
Villa Rica has the most perfect location, with panoramic views of the Bay of Patti and the Aeolian Islands. It is just a short distance from the motorway which runs from Palermo to Messina which makes visits to the Islands, Taormina, and Palermo within easy reach. Even so, the quiet setting makes you feel as though you are in the middle of nowhere amongst the olive & citrus trees.
The restaurant serves fresh local ingredients; some of which are from the farm itself, in traditional recipes and the results are delicious. There were several parties of locals who made the trip up to Villa Rica for dinner during our stay and you can’t get a much better recommendation than that! We booked bed and breakfast, but the food was so fantastic that we chose to eat in the restaurant on 4 out of 5 evenings. When it was closed on the Wednesday (early season only) we took a recommendation from Alfredo, one of the family members who run Villa Rica, and visited La Terrazze - a restaurant on the beach at nearby San Giorgio for some great seafood.
Our room was large with a spare single bed and a table and chairs. The decor was simple but stylish and the high ceilings with wooden beams made it feel even larger as well as keeping it cool enough that we did not need to use the air-conditioning.
The Natoli family who own and run Villa Rica were very welcoming and nothing was ever too much trouble. They create a very relaxed & friendly environment that you would never find in most hotels. Sharing a beer and a game of table tennis with the boys was a real pleasure.
All in all, we could not have enjoyed ourselves more (other than by staying longer!) and we cannot wait to return.
