“Welcoming, cozy villa with spectacular views and excellent location”

My husband and I stayed for 1 week with our sons ages 13, 11, and 8 and we all fell in love with Tartagli Bassi. The owner, Diana, has made every effort to make the villa welcoming to renters. The kitchen was stocked with olive oil, vinegar, spices and many simple foods which we were welcome to use (and replace as needed), plus there was pasta and water in the refrigerator for us. Diana provided detailed directions and descriptions of shops, towns, places to go and restaurants to try. Her packet of information was basically our bible during the stay, and incredibly helpful.

The villa had wifi, plus plenty of books and movies to watch. Diana has many maps of the area and tour books we found helpful. The beds were comfortable and everything was clean and well cared for. Even hanging clean laundry to dry on the clothesline strung between two olive trees was a pleasure since the view of the Tuscan and Umbrian hills was breathtaking. Even though the temperatures were in the 90s the whole week, the villa stayed cool when we closed the shutters during the heat of the day. At night cool breezes would blow through the windows, plus there were wonderful fans in every bedroom. We were very comfortable.

A very short walk took us into the beautiful, walled hill town of Paciano which has a few cafes, grocery, butcher, pharmacy and a wonderful restaurant La Loggetta. We explored many of the close hill towns such as Panicale and Castigione del Lago, where our sons loved exploring the castle. The location of Tartagli Bassi was perfect for a day trip to Orvieto and Siena. In the evenings we would cook dinner at the villa, watch the sunset and enjoy the pool.

The keyholder of the property was also full of helpful suggestions for us, and very kind throughout the week when we needed to take our son to the hospital (for strep throat). She provided a translation of his symptoms and even offered to come with us! I called and texted her multiple times and she was always more than helpful.
I cannot recommend this property enough; it exceeded our expectations.

“Fantastic property in wonderful location”

We heard of this house from a friend who lives in the village of Paciano (5 minutes' walk from the house and an absurdly picturesque mediaeval hill town). We stayed there twice, in April and October of 2011; the first time three of us rented half the house, the second my wife and I and four friend took the whole thing for the week. The price is very reasonable, especially if you share the cost with a group of friends.

The house and setting are wonderful: five bedrooms (three upstairs in a self-contained unit), two kitchens - one of them large - a big dining room with a large table that allowed us to feed a dozen people on a couple of occasions, all set in olive groves with views across to Umbria, Tuscany and Lake Trasimeno. There is a lovely terrace upstairs with great views - perfect for sitting out with a glass of wine on a fine day. Plus a pizza oven, a fireplace and a grill (wood is provided for all these). Oh, and there's wireless for the email- and Internet-addicted.

The village is a short walk, and the countryside is dotted with lovely hill towns. Castiliogne del Lago is 20 minutes' drive and has good supermarkets and some lovely lakeside walks as well as some fun shopping (especially for food in the old city itself). Siena - one of the most glorious of cities - is 70 km away. Paciano itself is midway between Rome and Florence, and easily accessible by train to the nearby town of Chiusi... from Chiusi you can rent a car from Hertz or Avis and drive the 20 minutes through lovely countryside to the village and the house.

Overall, the house is the perfect place to relax for a week (or more) with friends or family. We cooked, swam in the pool, read, hung out, chatted, and took occasional trips to nearby villages or other sights. The local house manager is Leslie Busby, a warm, absolutely delightful American woman who has lived in Italy for many years.

Will definitely go back.
