“Terrific week at Il Fontanaro / Tartagli with an infant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 11, 2013

Just back from a superb week staying in the Tartagli accommodation (Sangiovese room) which is part of Il Fontanaro.

This was our first proper holiday with our 10 month old daughter so we were very keen to ensure we found somewhere that would be suitable and child friendly. We couldnt have picked a better choice.

The tartagli accommodation was slightly better for our needs in our opinion with the baby because you could buggy walk into Paciano from there (which we did many evenings!) whereas it would be a bit more challenging from Fontanaro as its a few minutes further from the town along a hilly unpaved road.

Without a baby Il Fontanaro is possibly more charming as it is a beautiful farmhouse, however staying at Tartagli you're more than welcome to go there for wine/oil tasting or the cooking class so we ended up spending some time in both.

A high chair, travel cot and baby bath were all provided and of a high standard, and the whole accommodation was very baby friendly (easy to cordon off areas for playing in etc).

The vegetable garden is also terrific and we cooked much of the food for the baby from the garden (and a few dishes for ourselves!) which was a real treat.

Paciano is small (2 restaurants, 2 bars) but very unspoilt and charming and a great option for evenings where you dont want to be more ambitious and venture to the many hilltowns within an hour drive.

Lucia and Alina are fantastic hosts and make a great team. Alina is very knowledgeable about the local area and helped us build up an itinerary of fun things to do over the week (thoroughly recommend the winery / lunch visit to Avignonesi which is spectacular, at house massages were also great).

We also did the cooking course at Fontanaro which was a fun experience, Alina organised a babysitter for us who came to the house and did a great job keeping our daughter entertained while we cooked nearby. The baby was then able to join us for lunch afterwards and try the food. All in all it was very comfortable and impeccable support for helping parents have some fun adult time comfortable in the knowledge the baby was only metres away and well looked after.

We would gladly go back and are considering another trip with some friends with similar aged infants next year.

Room Tip: Sangiovese is perfect for a couple or a couple and a baby. Its directly in front of a lovely shared...

we just spent a wonderful day learning how to cook an Italian meal. The hospitality was wonderful. It was a truly unique, boutique type of experience. We were greeted at the train station and driven to il fontanaro on a route through lovely Tuscan/Umbrian hills. Alina and Lucca are passionate about the food, the wine and providing a truly wonderful experience. It was as if they were sharing their lovely life with us. We were only there for the day of cooking and wine tasting but intend to return to stay as the accommodations looked excellent as well.

Fontanaro was a week of pure bliss & relaxation, we LOVED everything about the place! Lucia & Alina were amazing hosts and became good friends. The cooking Lesson & Oil & Wine tasting day was so much fun. The pool & gardens were well kept & beckoned us to spend time chilling out each day. The restaurant recommendations were all fabulous & riding bikes to Paciano for coffee was loads of fun. The location is great for day trips to other towns in Tuscany & Umbria. Our Villa Frantoio was perfect & had the most amazing sunsets! Fontanaro was a highlight of our trip, we didn't want to leave & we have promised ourselves that we will return!

I booked a "Tuscan Farmhouse Experience" day trip tour through Walks of Italy. I could not have been more pleased. Lucia and Alina go above and beyond to make sure their guests feel at home and comfortable right away, even if you're just there for a few hours! We started the afternoon by touring their olive mill and learning about their passionate work on the farm. I immediately wished that I was staying at the villa. It was a perfect place to soak in some sun, learn about their olive oil making process, and actually cook (from scratch, of course) a full Tuscan lunch, including ravioli with mozzarella, ricotta, and parmesan cheese, fresh sauce made from eggplant, basil, onion, and tomato, and an apricot fruit cake that melted in my mouth. Everything that we ate was picked from the organic farm. I even had time to float in their infinity pool, looking over the mountains of Tuscany. I could not recommend Il Fontanaro enough- you will feel right at home in this beautiful, Italian oasis. I am coming back to stay for at least a week sometime very soon!

We found Il Fontanaro on line and thought it may be a nice place to spend our honeymoon. It is set in quiet countryside, only a ten minute walk from the village of Paciano with three lovely local restaurants and a shop, and is ideal for exploring both Umbria and Tuscany. Owner Lucia provided detailed information about the facilities and the area and answered all our queries; her warm friendliness reassured us this would be the ideal place for us and we weren't disappointed! We stayed at the beautiful Leccino cottage, sunbathed by the swimming pool offering some fantastic views of the mountains and travelled around Umbria and Tuscany. Lucia and Alina were amazing hosts - not only did they provide valuable local information how to make the most of our stay, but they went over and above their call of duty to make us feel welcome and ensure we had a brilliant time - nothing was too much trouble! We couldn't recommend it enough and thank you Lucia and Alina for making our stay perfect!

My parents and I just returned from a week's stay at the Sagrantino villa. The accommodations are first-class. The grounds are beautifully maintained. Lucia, the owner, loves roses, and was planting even more in the gardens, amongst the hedges of rosemary, and the lavender. Also in the gardens are sage and thyme, beautiful. It's such a peaceful place. We even heard a cuckoo.

Paciano is a lovely medieval village in easy walking distance. It even has a great, inexpensive coffee/cafe/bar/general store within the walls.

Lucia does everything she can to ensure you have an outstanding vacation, and her restaurant recommendations are spot-on.
