“La Contea: Nice enough, but not all it's cracked up to be”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2011

We just returned from a three nights stay at La Contea, and we do feel the rave reviews are a bit over the top. For instance, we had prebooked the room some weeks back, and were suprised to learn that the room was a bit of a walk from La Contea itself. They have a winery, and our room was above the winery. Apart from much too hard beds there was nothing wrong with the room (it had a balcony with a spectacular panorama), and the already (mentioned by others) fruit basket was there too (although the fruit had seen better days). We booked at the Contea because we wanted a room in the center of Neive, but noone ever told us that our accomodation would be a steep 5-10 minutes walk from there. Older people would in fact find the walk troublesome; they should of course routinely inform guests of this.

We never dined at the restaurant; who would dare after having read the reviews, I am refering to the owner who seems to have a tendency to give people a hard time if they don't play by his pipe. We did have breakfast however, so we saw the restaurant. The choice was not very impressive, but then again you probably can't expect much more from a country without breakfast traditions. Someone evidently put a lot of work into decorating the restaurant, but that was decades ago, and the cobwebs in the ceiling tell the tale of little or no cleaning and overdue maintenance.

The web site should inform travelers of the annex with the climb. There is no air conditioning in the annex. This was no problem for us since there's no need for it in October, but be warned if you are thinking of booking during the summer.

Contea has a nice wine shop with a very friendly young lady. She was easy to extract a smile from, somehow you get the feeling the don't smile much at the Contea itself (check out the Youtube videos and you will know what I am refering to).
Neive itself is a very charming little town the can be recommended, although staying in La Morra or Barolo would be more smack in the middle of things. Piemonte is absolutely wonderful and cannot be recommended strongly enough!

We were given a bottle of La Contea wine when we left, of course an appreciated gesture.

This property is close to paradise, the whole presentation and amenities are exquisite. First you have the location which is nestled in the Barbaresco vineyards (our now favourite Italian wines) the "hotel" is private, quiet, in the center of the small Nieve village, the rooms are big and comfortable being fully equipped. There is a fruit basket in your room upon arrival, the hotel has an enoteca which sells exquisite produce and whine from the region, then you have in the next building a FANTASTIC restaurant serving breakfast lunch and dinner with a menu to die for, the food is the best we had in our Italian trip. The owner and his family are great people and determined to make your stay unforgettable in all aspects. La Contea's Barbaresco wine is the best we had in that region, we unfortunately only stayed 2 days and we regretted afterwards not prolonging our stay for a couple more nights. Highly recommended 5/5

I don't usually write reviews but felt compelled to in this case. We were recommended to La Contea by our close friends and were alarmed by reading some bad reviews about the service.

Well when we got to the hotel, the gentleman who was to be our waiter that night insisted on taking out bags to our room and would not take a tip for doing so.

Later that night we enjoyed a truely gourmet Italian diner, with great wine. Italians like simple, classic traditional flavors. When executed properly, this is what makes Italian food so great. However, this is also why some Italian food can become cliche and bland.

La Contea keeps true to the essence of Italian simplicity, while providing amazing flavors and subtleties to its cuisine.

The excellent food combined with the warm and caring service made our experience at La Contea an extremely memorable one.

La Contea occupies 2 buildings at the top of the ancient town of Neive, between Asti and Alba. The old town is characterized by winding streets of pretty houses, many enotecas, and views of the Piedmont wine country. Think Seguret and Gigondas in France. La Contea is a family establishment; a friendly young man welcomed us in the afternoon and waited on us at dinner. Our room was decorated tastefully and included a vine-covered balcony with a fine view. We chose the black truffle prix fixe dinner which was heavenly. Breakfast, plates of cheese and local ham and salami, as well as good coffee and tasty tea breads and roles, was served in the family's enoteca. La Contea's combination of beautiful lodging and an excellent restaurant (specializing in local food and wine) reminds me of Hotel Restaurant du Vieux Pont in Belcastel, France. I'll remember La Contea as a highlight in a trip that was full of great places and food.

Room Tip: Probably all rooms are excellent.

We have stayed at La Contea twice, both in October around the time for the wine harvest and wine festival. The rooms might not be the must luxurious, but they are authentic and charming in harmony with the ancient spirit of the beautiful village of Neive. The staff is very friendly, you feel like a part of the family and the food and wine in the restaurant is simply heavenly. The homemade pasta with white truffles, the green gnocci with cheesesauce, fried rabbit with black truffle sauce, ...I could go on. All accompanied with the ecologically produced Contea Barbaresco. We will definately be back.

We are not fussy, nor do we want a cold and luxurious place to stay. And, we love the Piemonte. My new husband - and longstanding boyfriend - worked in Northern Italy for a number of years, but I am relatively new to travel. We find, when we go to the Piemonte, or elsewhere, that it is helpful to have backup plans - A and B (rarely C) when looking for a place to stay, and eat. Sometimes research and guidebooks disappoint, or you might have something else in mind when you get there....

That said, we arrived in Neive, where we've never been (he might have passed through), to La Contea, on its hilltop, with its grace and beautiful views. It's a country inn, longstanding, with something I'd call spirit and a wonderful hospitality. The rooms aren't luxurious. Ours even had some linoleum peeling in a corner. That beautiful ancient light in the room. I loved it -- hurray, no renovation.

But we were tired when we arrived and there was a basket of fruit and cookies, and a nice fellow to greet us with an arching brow who turned out to be the most maternal of waiters. We had dinner there that night and chose the full menu - excellent food and service - a leisurely pace, and we felt befriended by staff. Early morning I smelled the breads which appeared fresh at our breakfast buffet. We also had blood-orange juice and an excellent variety of cheese and meat. The buffet was served in the main dining room and so the atmosphere was one of country elegance and good humor. It was my favorite breakfast of the trip.

The rooms are above the inn and so, as we climbed up and down the stairs from our day of touring, we might easily have felt as though we were disturbing the workings of the busy restaurant. But, we were put at ease...I had an emergency. The staff let me set up, and use my computer in the dining room, right before the restaurant opened, and Mr. "arching brow" stood by and kept the others working around me as I sat at the computer typing away. Neive - the old city - is beautiful to walk in, and the surrounding landscapes full of vines and vistas of ancient buildings and agriculture. When we left La Contea we were given some lovely souvenirs (I won't mention what they were in case they change seasonally) and I felt really happy. During the rest of our weeks in Northern Italy we occasionally reverted to plan B and once C, I think. But for us La Contea was a lovely embodiment of the Piemonte we cherish: warmth, grace and delicousness. Not perfect...but that is not what we seek...

We stayed in this beautiful place for 2 nights. The rooms are lovely. We had a small balcony which overlooked the village. There was fruit left in the bedroom when we arrived and was topped up the following morning after the room was cleaned. We thought this was a lovely gesture. We couldn't eat in the (La Contea) restaurant as we arrived on a Monday and the restaurant is closed on Mondays. We ate in La Luna Nel Pozzo which was SPECTACULAR! The following night we ate in La Contea - this was also superb. These two meals were one of the best we've ever had in Italy. The staff are very friendly and generous (they gave us two bottles of their own wine when we left!). We would highly recommend it. It is also excellent value. Nieve is a beautiful, quiet, sleepy village. We will be back! PS. La Contea also have a fabulous wine shop!

  • Liked — Very peaceful and excellent food
